More about Our Toronto-made jewellery
Most jewellery is designed first and the stone is found to fit. We work the other way round. The gem comes first — its colour, its life, the way it catches light across the counter — and the piece is designed around it. A goldsmith can build a thousand variations of a ring, but there's only ever one of a given emerald or sapphire, so we let the stone lead and the metal follow. Sit down with a loose, certified gem you love, and we design the setting that shows it off best.
Made by hand, here in the city
Every finished piece is made in Toronto by master goldsmiths and designers — not ordered in from a catalogue or cast off-shore. David's first job outside the family business was building custom rings by hand at a Toronto gold-casting house, and that bench-level craft is still how the work gets done. We set in gold that's recycled right here in Toronto, refined by Johnson Matthey, so the metal around your stone has a clean Canadian start.
Finished pieces, or build around a loose stone
You've two ways in. Take a finished piece as it is — we keep hundreds of rings, pendants and earrings on hand, set with sapphire, emerald and ruby. Or pick a loose, certified stone and we'll build the piece around it by hand, with origin and treatment disclosed on every gem. Either way the work happens at our bench, and either way you get to look at the actual stones first — there's no guessing from a photo.
What that means for you
Because we're the dealer, not a shop ordering in, you sit with one of Canada's largest selections of fine coloured gemstones and choose the exact stone before a single design decision is made. That's the part that's hard to find anywhere else in Toronto: hundreds of loose, certified emeralds, rubies and sapphires in front of you, and goldsmiths down the hall ready to build around whichever one you fall for.
More questions
How does the gem-first custom process actually work?
You come in and look over the loose, certified stones — sapphire, emerald, ruby and more — and pick the one you love. From there our designers sketch a setting built around that exact gem, you approve the design, and our goldsmiths make it by hand here in Toronto. Because the stone is chosen first, nothing about the setting is a compromise — every line is drawn to suit your gem.
Is the gold really recycled in Toronto?
Yes. The gold we set your stone in is recycled right here in Toronto, Canada, refined by Johnson Matthey. It's the same refiner the trade relies on — we just think it's worth telling you where your metal comes from.
Why choose a loose stone before the design?
There's only one of any given fine coloured gemstone — its colour and character are its own. When you choose the stone first, the design serves the gem instead of the gem being squeezed into a setting that was drawn before anyone saw it. It's the difference between a piece built for your stone and a stone dropped into a generic mount.
I already have a jeweller — can I just buy the loose gem?
Of course. Already have a jeweller you trust and just can't find the right stone? Come in, sit with the loose certified gems, get the right one, and take it to them — we're glad to simply sell you the stone. Origin and treatment are disclosed, and the GIA report comes with it.
Are the finished pieces certified?
Many of our loose stones are certified by GIA New York — over 230 in stock — and every gemstone is graded on site by a GIA-certified specialist, with the lab report supplied. Our finished pieces are built around these graded stones, so the colour you see is the colour you take home.
Do you deliver?
We do. We offer complimentary insured delivery within Canada and the United States, with international delivery arranged on request. Or come see us in person at 27 Queen St East, Suite 1011 — pull up a chair, and we'll show you the actual stones.
