Frequently asked questions

Where can I get a custom opal ring made in Toronto?

At Skyjems, 27 Queen St East, Suite 1011. We carry a deep selection of Australian and Ethiopian opal, every gem graded on site by a GIA-certified specialist. Choose your dream opal in person, and if you want we can design custom jewellery with you, carried out by our master goldsmiths here in Toronto. A family gemstone dealer since 1967.

Don't know what you want to make? Check out our portfolio for inspiration, we have created tens of thousands of rings over the past 27 years.

Can I see loose opals before I choose one?

Yes — that's how we work. Book a viewing or just walk in, sit down with the actual stones, and we'll discuss origin and treatment on every opal.

Is opal tough enough for a ring?

Opal is softer and more delicate than sapphire, so it's happiest in a pendant or earrings, or a ring you wear with a little care — and we'll show you protective settings that help. Every opal is natural, and we'll tell you plainly whether a stone is a solid, a doublet or a triplet.

Opals fall into three subgroups: the precious opal (which boasts the most magnificent display of refracted colours), the common opal (which does not display the colour refraction), and the yellow-red fire opal. While the origin of the opal’s name is unclear, many think it comes from the Sanskrit word upala, which means “precious stone”, or from opalus, the gem’s ancient Latin name. Ancient cultures believed that opals fell from the sky during thunderstorms and held lightning inside them, making them the most precious and powerful stones of all. While about 95% of the world’s opal production comes from Australia, Ethiopian opals (sometimes called Welo opals) have been steadily growing in popularity since a discovery there in the mid-1990s, thanks to the stones’ vivid play-of-colour and affordable pricing.
