Quartz

The most abundant and widely-distributed mineral on the surface of the Earth, quartz has been used in jewellery for thousands of years. It occurs in many forms and colours with more variety names than any other mineral. Clear quartz specimens were called krystallos (crystal) by the ancient Greeks, and were believed to be water that was permanently frozen. The name quartz is rumoured to be based on an old Slavic word meaning “hard”, though the source may come from Saxon miners who called small veins of quartz querklüfte and ore itself erz or ertz. Over time, the two may have been shortened and combined before being adapted to its current form in different languages.

Popular quartz varieties used in jewellery include agate, amethyst, aventurine, citrine, and chalcedony, as well as rose and smoky quartz.
