These standards are codified principally through the CIBJO Pearl Book, the governing document of the World Jewellery Confederation, and are reinforced by Japanese domestic trade regulations administered through industry bodies such as the Japan Pearl Exporters' Association (JPEA). Together, these frameworks define what may legitimately be called an akoya pearl, establish minimum quality benchmarks, and mandate disclosure of the treatments routinely applied during post-harvest processing.
Historical Context
The akoya cultured pearl industry was pioneered in Japan in the early twentieth century, most closely associated with the work of Mikimoto Kōkichi, whose commercial cultivation of Pinctada fucata martensii transformed the global pearl market. By the mid-twentieth century, Japan had become the world's dominant supplier of round, high-lustre saltwater cultured pearls, and the term "akoya" — derived from a Japanese word for the oyster itself — had entered international trade vocabulary as a mark of quality and provenance. As competing producers emerged, particularly in China, which began producing akoya pearls at commercial scale from the 1980s onward, the need for formal, enforceable standards became pressing. Unregulated use of the akoya designation, combined with inconsistent treatment disclosure, threatened consumer confidence and the integrity of the premium Japanese product.
Species Definition and Geographic Scope
The foundational requirement of the Akoya Pearl Standard is biological: an akoya cultured pearl must be produced by Pinctada fucata martensii (or the closely related Pinctada fucata subspecies recognised within the same complex). This species is farmed principally in Japanese coastal waters — historically centred on Mie Prefecture, Ehime Prefecture, and Nagasaki Prefecture — and in Chinese coastal waters, particularly along the coasts of Guangdong and Fujian provinces. Pearls from either origin may qualify as akoya provided they meet the species and quality criteria; origin itself is a separate, additional disclosure.
Critically, the standard excludes nucleated freshwater cultured pearls from the akoya designation, regardless of their visual resemblance to saltwater akoya pearls. This exclusion is significant because Chinese freshwater pearl production has, at various quality tiers, produced round, white pearls with high lustre that can superficially resemble akoya pearls. Misrepresentation of such pearls as akoya constitutes a trade violation under both CIBJO guidelines and applicable consumer protection regulations in major markets.
The CIBJO Pearl Book
The CIBJO Pearl Book is the primary international reference document for pearl nomenclature and grading. Published and periodically updated by CIBJO (the World Jewellery Confederation), the Pearl Book establishes definitions for natural pearls, cultured pearls, and imitation pearls; specifies the species requirements for named pearl varieties including akoya, South Sea, and Tahitian; and sets out mandatory disclosure obligations for treatments. The Pearl Book does not prescribe a single numerical grading scale — pearl grading systems remain proprietary to individual laboratories and trading houses — but it establishes the qualitative framework within which any grading must operate.
Under the CIBJO framework, the term "akoya" is reserved for cultured pearls from Pinctada fucata martensii and must not be applied to freshwater pearls or to pearls from other saltwater species. The Pearl Book also requires that the cultured nature of akoya pearls be disclosed at all points of sale, a requirement that has been standard practice in major markets for decades but remains relevant in some retail contexts.
Nacre Thickness
Nacre thickness is among the most consequential quality variables in akoya pearls, directly affecting durability, lustre depth, and long-term wearability. Because akoya pearls are bead-nucleated — a spherical bead of shell (typically from the freshwater mussel Amblema plicata) is implanted alongside a small piece of mantle tissue — the nacre layer is the relatively thin coating of aragonite platelets deposited by the oyster over the nucleus during the cultivation period, which typically ranges from ten to eighteen months.
The CIBJO Pearl Book recommends a minimum nacre thickness of 0.35 mm for akoya cultured pearls, a threshold below which the nacre is considered insufficiently robust for normal jewellery use and may exhibit "blinking" — a visual phenomenon in which the underlying bead nucleus becomes visible through the nacre under direct light. The Japanese domestic standard, historically enforced through JPEA export inspection, has at various periods applied a minimum of 0.3 mm to 0.4 mm depending on pearl diameter and intended market. Independent gemmological laboratories, including the GIA Pearl Laboratory, assess nacre thickness using X-ray or other non-destructive imaging methods.
Treatment Disclosure Requirements
Virtually all commercially traded akoya pearls undergo post-harvest treatment, and the Akoya Pearl Standard requires disclosure of these processes. The principal treatments are as follows.
- Bleaching: Harvested akoya pearls are routinely bleached using hydrogen peroxide or similar agents to lighten and homogenise their body colour, which in its natural state is often yellowish or greenish. Bleaching is considered a standard, accepted process in the trade, but must be disclosed.
- Pinking (tinting): Many akoya pearls are subjected to a pinking treatment — immersion in a dye solution, typically rose-tinted — to enhance or impart the pinkish overtone that the market associates with high-quality Japanese akoya pearls. This treatment must be disclosed as a colour enhancement. Gemmological laboratories can detect pinking through spectroscopic examination, and CIBJO guidelines classify it as a treatment requiring explicit disclosure rather than a process that may be left unstated.
- Buffing and polishing: Surface polishing is universally applied and is not considered a treatment requiring separate disclosure, being analogous to the cutting and polishing of faceted stones.
- Maeshori (pre-treatment): A proprietary Japanese pre-treatment process, maeshori, involves conditioning the pearl surface — sometimes with mild acid or other agents — prior to bleaching, and is considered by some in the trade to improve lustre. Its status as a disclosable treatment has been debated within the industry.
Grading Criteria
While the Akoya Pearl Standard does not mandate a universal grading scale, the quality factors assessed under any compliant grading system are well-established and consistent across major laboratories and trading organisations. They include:
- Lustre: The intensity and sharpness of light reflection from the nacre surface, widely regarded as the single most important quality factor in akoya pearls. High-lustre akoya pearls exhibit a mirror-like, almost metallic reflectivity.
- Surface quality: The degree to which the pearl surface is free from blemishes, pits, wrinkles, and other irregularities.
- Shape: Round and near-round are the most commercially valued forms; baroque and semi-baroque akoya pearls exist but command lower prices.
- Body colour and overtone: White and cream body colours with rose or silver overtones are most prized in Western markets; the pinkish overtone associated with Japanese akoya pearls is a significant value factor.
- Size: Akoya pearls typically range from approximately 2 mm to 10 mm in diameter, with sizes above 8 mm being relatively scarce and commanding premium prices.
- Matching: For strands and multi-pearl jewellery, the consistency of size, colour, shape, and lustre across all pearls is assessed as a separate quality dimension.
Regulatory and Laboratory Context
In Japan, the pearl export inspection system historically administered by the JPEA provided a degree of official quality control, though the mandatory export inspection programme was relaxed in the 1990s as trade liberalisation proceeded. Today, compliance with the Akoya Pearl Standard in international trade relies primarily on voluntary adherence to CIBJO guidelines, the standards of national trade associations (such as the American Gem Trade Association in the United States), and the certification services of independent gemmological laboratories. The GIA, Gübelin Gem Lab, and specialist pearl laboratories such as the SSEF Swiss Gemmological Institute offer pearl identification and grading reports that assess species, nacre thickness, treatment status, and quality factors in accordance with CIBJO-aligned criteria.
Consumer protection legislation in the European Union, the United States, and Japan independently requires accurate description of goods offered for sale, meaning that misrepresentation of pearl species or undisclosed treatment carries legal as well as trade-ethical consequences.

The Akoya Pearl Standard underpins the premium positioning of akoya cultured pearls — particularly Japanese-origin akoya pearls — in the global jewellery market. Transparent adherence to species definitions, nacre thickness benchmarks, and treatment disclosure allows consumers and trade buyers to make informed comparisons and supports the price differential between high-quality Japanese akoya pearls and lower-cost alternatives.
