Albert Helzberg
Founder of Helzberg Diamonds and pioneer of accessible fine jewellery retail in America
Albert Helzberg was the founder of Helzberg Diamonds, a retail jewellery chain established in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1915. Beginning as a modest single-store operation, the business grew over the course of the twentieth century into one of the most recognised diamond jewellery retail chains in the United States, with a particular focus on diamond engagement rings and accessible fine jewellery for a broad consumer market. The Helzberg name became closely associated with the democratisation of diamond jewellery in mid-century America, positioning quality gemstone jewellery within reach of middle-income buyers at a time when such goods had largely been the preserve of specialist or luxury retailers.
The Business and Its Growth
Under Albert Helzberg and subsequent family leadership, Helzberg Diamonds expanded steadily through the latter half of the twentieth century, opening locations across multiple American states. The company's retail model emphasised volume, consistent quality standards, and consumer trust — characteristics that distinguished it within a fragmented and often opaque jewellery retail landscape. By the 1990s, Helzberg Diamonds operated several hundred stores nationwide, making it one of the larger speciality jewellery chains in the country.
Acquisition by Berkshire Hathaway
In 1995, Helzberg Diamonds was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway, the holding company led by Warren Buffett. The acquisition brought the chain under the same corporate umbrella as other Berkshire consumer and retail holdings and is frequently cited in accounts of Buffett's investment philosophy as an example of acquiring a well-managed, brand-recognised consumer business. The chain continued to operate under the Helzberg Diamonds name following the acquisition.
Philanthropic Legacy
Members of the Helzberg family have been active in philanthropic endeavours, particularly in the areas of entrepreneurship education and retail management. Barnett Helzberg Jr., who led the company prior to the Berkshire Hathaway sale, has been associated with initiatives supporting small business development and leadership programmes in the Kansas City region, reflecting a broader family commitment to civic and educational causes.
