Alberta, Canada's westernmost Prairie province, holds a singular distinction in the world of gemmology: it is the type locality and overwhelmingly dominant source of ammolite, the iridescent, organically derived gemstone formed from the fossilised shells of Late Cretaceous ammonites. While Alberta is better known internationally for its petroleum reserves and the dinosaur-rich badlands of the Red Deer River valley, it is the province's southern river corridors — particularly the drainage of the St. Mary River near Lethbridge — that have yielded the only commercially significant deposits of gem-quality ammolite on Earth. GIA recognises Alberta as the sole meaningful source of this material, and the province itself formally designated ammolite as its official gemstone in 2004.
Geological Setting
Ammolite originates within the Bearpaw Formation, a Late Cretaceous marine sequence deposited roughly 71 to 75 million years ago when a shallow inland sea — the Western Interior Seaway — divided North America from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic. As the seaway retreated, vast numbers of ammonites, principally of the genus Placenticeras (with lesser contributions from Baculites and Acanthoscaphites), were buried in the fine-grained bentonitic mudstones and shales that characterise the formation.
The iridescent gem layer is the original aragonitic shell material, preserved through a rare combination of low-oxygen burial conditions, minimal diagenetic alteration, and the presence of trace elements — iron, magnesium, titanium, and chromium among them — that contributed to the shell's structural integrity over geological time. The aragonite lamellae, stacked in layers measured in micrometres, produce interference colours through thin-film optical effects analogous to those seen in precious opal, though the physical mechanism is distinct. The result is a play of colour that can span the full visible spectrum, with red and green being the most common hues and blue and violet the rarest and most commercially prized.
Gem-quality ammolite is concentrated in a relatively narrow geographic band along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountain foothills in southern Alberta, with the richest exposures found near the towns of Lethbridge, Magrath, and Taber, and along the St. Mary, Belly, and Oldman river systems. The Bearpaw Formation outcrops and near-surface deposits in this corridor have proven amenable to open-cut and shallow underground extraction.
Commercial Mining History
Although fossil ammonites from the Bearpaw Formation were known to palaeontologists and collectors from the late nineteenth century onward, systematic commercial exploitation of ammolite as a gemstone did not begin until the early 1980s. The Kainah (Blood) Nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy, whose traditional territory encompasses much of the St. Mary River drainage, were among the first to recognise the material's commercial potential. Korite International, founded in 1979 and headquartered in Calgary, became the dominant mining and marketing entity and remains the world's principal producer of gem-quality ammolite. The company holds exclusive mining rights over the most productive sections of the deposit and has developed grading standards, treatment protocols, and distribution networks that effectively define the commercial market for the material.
A smaller but significant operation, Ammolite Gems of Canada (formerly known under various trade names), has also worked deposits in the region, and artisanal collection by members of the Kainah Nation continues under separate arrangements. The total annual production of gem-quality material is modest by the standards of major gemstone industries; estimates suggest that only a fraction of extracted ammolite meets the threshold for use in fine jewellery without substantial enhancement.
Gem Characteristics and Quality Factors
Ammolite as a gem material is evaluated on several criteria specific to its nature as a thin, layered organic substance:
- Colour range and coverage: The breadth of spectral colours displayed across the surface, and the uniformity of that coverage without grey or brown dead zones, are primary quality indicators. Stones showing red, orange, and green are most common; blue and violet are scarcer and command significant premiums.
- Brightness and iridescence: The intensity and shift of colour as the viewing angle changes — analogous to the play-of-colour criterion applied to opal — is central to valuation. High-grade material displays vivid, rolling colour shifts across the full face of the stone.
- Thickness and integrity of the gem layer: The iridescent aragonite layer is typically less than one millimetre thick and is inherently fragile. Thicker, crack-free sections are considerably more valuable than thin or fissured material.
- Pattern: Certain surface patterns — described in the trade as dragon skin (a mosaic of polygonal colour cells) or stained glass — are considered especially desirable.
Because the gem layer is so thin and the underlying matrix (typically dark shale or ironstone) so structurally different, the vast majority of commercial ammolite is fabricated as a triplet: the natural ammolite layer is bonded to a stabilising backing of shale, basalt, or synthetic material, then capped with a protective dome of synthetic spinel, quartz, or occasionally natural quartz crystal. Doublets (without the cap) and, rarely, solid natural ammolite pieces are also produced, the latter commanding the highest values. Disclosure of the construction type is standard practice among reputable dealers and is required by most major gemmological trade organisations.
Cultural and Institutional Recognition
The Blackfoot peoples of southern Alberta have long regarded the iridescent ammonite shell as sacred, referring to it as Iniskim (buffalo stone) and attributing to it protective and spiritually restorative properties. This cultural heritage predates commercial exploitation by centuries and continues to inform the relationship between indigenous communities and the ammolite industry.
Alberta's formal designation of ammolite as the provincial gemstone in 2004 was both a recognition of its geological uniqueness and an acknowledgement of its growing economic significance to the region. The designation also served a practical marketing function, reinforcing Alberta's identity as the exclusive source of a material with no meaningful competitor locality anywhere in the world. Small quantities of iridescent ammonite shell have been reported from Morocco, Madagascar, and the United States (notably from the Bear Paw Shale of Montana, which is the same geological formation extending across the international border), but none of these occurrences has produced gem-quality material in commercially significant quantities.
In the Trade
Ammolite from Alberta occupies an unusual market position: it is simultaneously a fossil, an organic gemstone, and a material with a single dominant commercial producer, which gives Korite International considerable influence over pricing and grading standards. The material is sold through fine jewellery retailers in Canada, the United States, Japan, and increasingly in China, where the stone's vivid colours and its association with the ammonite's spiral form — read in Feng Shui practice as a symbol of continuous energy flow — have driven demand.
Gemmological laboratories, including GIA, issue identification reports for ammolite that confirm species, origin (Alberta, Bearpaw Formation), and construction type (natural solid, doublet, or triplet). Treatment disclosure — principally the use of resin impregnation to stabilise cracked or friable gem layers — is an important component of responsible trading in this material.
Because the deposit is finite and the gem-quality fraction of extracted material is small, there is legitimate discussion within the trade about long-term supply sustainability. Korite International has published statements on responsible extraction practices, though independent verification of reserve estimates is limited. Alberta ammolite thus presents a case study in the intersection of geological rarity, cultural significance, and commercial stewardship that is increasingly relevant across the broader gemstone industry.
