Five centuries of cutting, trading, and grading at the heart of the global diamond industry

Antwerp, the principal port city of northern Belgium, has occupied a singular position in the world diamond trade for more than five hundred years. From its emergence as a cutting centre in the late fifteenth century to its present role as the hub through which an estimated eighty per cent of the world's rough diamonds and fifty per cent of polished diamonds by value are traded annually, the city has shaped the modern diamond industry in ways that no other locality can claim. Its institutions — the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), the HRD Antwerp grading laboratory, and four active diamond bourses — collectively define the standards, the ethics, and the commercial infrastructure by which diamonds are bought and sold worldwide.

Historical Origins

Diamond cutting is documented in Antwerp from at least the 1470s, when Flemish craftsmen began developing the techniques that would eventually yield the modern brilliant. The city's rise was inseparable from its broader commercial dominance: Antwerp was the wealthiest trading city in northern Europe during the sixteenth century, and its sophisticated merchant class provided both the capital and the clientele for a nascent luxury trade. Lodewyk van Berquem, a Flemish polisher working in Bruges and later associated with the Antwerp tradition, is credited in historical accounts with refining the use of a rotating wheel — the scaif — charged with a mixture of diamond dust and oil, a technique that made symmetrical faceting possible and laid the groundwork for the point cut and table cut forms that preceded the brilliant.

The sack of Antwerp by Spanish forces in 1576 and the subsequent closure of the Scheldt estuary drove many diamond merchants and cutters northward to Amsterdam, which dominated the trade through much of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Antwerp reasserted itself in the nineteenth century, particularly after Belgian independence in 1830 and the reopening of the Scheldt, and by the early twentieth century it had reclaimed its position as the world's foremost diamond centre, a status reinforced by the discovery and exploitation of South African and later Central African deposits that required a sophisticated international trading infrastructure.

The Diamond District

The physical heart of Antwerp's diamond trade is a compact area of roughly one square kilometre in the city's south, centred on Hoveniersstraat and the streets immediately surrounding Antwerp Central railway station. Within this district — colloquially known as the Diamantkwartier — operate several thousand businesses engaged in cutting, polishing, trading, setting, and financing diamonds. The concentration of expertise and capital within such a small geography creates the liquidity and price transparency that make Antwerp the reference market for rough and polished goods alike.

The district is home to four diamond bourses, each with its own membership and specialisation:

  • Beurs voor Diamanthandel — the oldest, founded in 1904, dealing primarily in polished diamonds.
  • Diamantclub van Antwerpen — established in 1893, focused on rough diamonds.
  • Vrije Diamanthandel — founded in 1911, trading both rough and polished goods.
  • Antwerpsche Diamantkring — founded in 1929, specialising in rough diamonds.

Membership of these bourses is governed by strict codes of conduct; disputes between members are adjudicated internally, and a trader expelled from one bourse is typically barred from all four. This self-regulatory tradition predates modern compliance frameworks by decades and reflects the industry's long reliance on reputation and trust as commercial instruments.

The Antwerp World Diamond Centre and Industry Governance

The Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) is the official representative body of the Antwerp diamond industry, recognised by the Belgian government and functioning as both a trade association and a regulatory interface. The AWDC administers import and export licensing, maintains statistical records of diamond flows through the city, and represents Antwerp's interests in international policy discussions, including those surrounding the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS).

The Kimberley Process, which came into force in 2003 to prevent the trade in conflict diamonds, was shaped in part by Antwerp's existing documentation and chain-of-custody practices. Belgium, with Antwerp as its operational centre, was among the founding participants of the KPCS and has consistently ranked among the largest declared importers and exporters of rough diamonds under the scheme's annual statistics.

HRD Antwerp

HRD Antwerp (Hoge Raad voor Diamant, or Diamond High Council) is one of the world's principal diamond grading laboratories and was founded in 1973 under the auspices of the Belgian diamond industry. Its grading reports for polished diamonds — covering the standard parameters of colour, clarity, cut, and carat weight — are accepted by traders and consumers internationally, and its certificates are commonly encountered in the European market alongside those issued by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI, itself headquartered in Antwerp).

HRD Antwerp also operates educational programmes in diamond grading and gemology, contributing to the professional formation of industry participants across Europe and beyond. The laboratory has published technical research on diamond fluorescence, colour grading methodology, and synthetic diamond detection, some of which has appeared in peer-reviewed gemmological literature.

Cutting Traditions and Contemporary Industry

Antwerp's cutting tradition has historically emphasised precision and yield optimisation over speed, a reflection of the high value of the rough material passing through the city. The city's master cutters developed and refined the proportions of the full brilliant cut during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and Antwerp-cut stones became synonymous with a certain standard of finish in the European trade.

From the latter decades of the twentieth century, large-scale cutting operations migrated substantially to lower-cost centres — principally Surat in India, which now accounts for the overwhelming majority of diamonds cut by volume — and more recently to facilities in China, Botswana, and southern Africa. Antwerp's contemporary cutting sector is accordingly smaller and more specialised than it was at its mid-century peak, concentrating on large, high-value, and technically complex stones for which the premium commanded by experienced craftsmen is commercially justified.

The city's enduring competitive advantage lies not in manufacturing but in trading, financing, and logistics. Antwerp's position at the intersection of major European transport networks, its deep pool of specialist expertise, its established legal and financial infrastructure, and the liquidity provided by its four bourses ensure that it remains the reference point for rough diamond pricing and the principal clearing-house for polished goods entering the European and global markets.

Significance for Gemmology

For the practising gemmologist, Antwerp is relevant on several levels. Grading reports from HRD Antwerp appear regularly in estate and auction contexts, and familiarity with their grading conventions — which differ in certain respects from GIA standards, particularly in the delineation of colour grades and the description of fluorescence — is essential for accurate appraisal. The city's role in the Kimberley Process means that documentation originating from Antwerp carries specific legal and ethical weight in provenance assessments. And the historical depth of Antwerp's cutting tradition informs the study of period stones: many significant diamonds that passed through European collections from the sixteenth century onward were cut or recut in Antwerp workshops, and understanding the city's stylistic evolution assists in dating and attributing antique cuts.
