The Apollo Blue was offered as Lot 401 in Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels sale held in Geneva on 16 May 2016. Sotheby's pre-sale estimate was placed at USD 38–45 million, a range that already signalled the house's confidence in the stone's ability to challenge or surpass existing auction benchmarks for blue diamonds. The hammer fell at a price that, with buyer's premium, resolved to approximately USD 42.1 million — within the estimate but at a level that nonetheless set a new per-carat record for blue diamonds at auction.

The same sale offered the Artemis Pink, a 16.00-carat Fancy Vivid Pink diamond also graded Internally Flawless by GIA, which sold for approximately USD 15.3 million. The fact that a single private collector acquired both stones on the same evening — pairing a record blue with a significant pink — attracted considerable commentary in the trade press and among auction specialists.
