Belmont Emerald

Belmont Emerald

Brazilian emerald from the Belmont mine in Itabira, Minas Gerais — a benchmark for traceable Brazilian production

Gem varietiesView in dictionary · 615 words

The Belmont emerald is a Brazilian emerald produced by the Mineração Belmont operation in Itabira, Minas Gerais. It is the most commercially significant individual Brazilian emerald source, and the term has become a recognised trade designator for stones with documented provenance from the mine. Belmont emeralds occupy a particular place in the international coloured-stone market: they offer Brazilian origin attribution, consistent supply, traceability documentation, and a colour profile distinct from the better-known Colombian and Zambian production.

Origin and colour profile

The Belmont mine lies in metamorphic terrain in central-eastern Minas Gerais, with mineralisation hosted in beryllium-bearing schists in contact with chromium-rich biotite-phlogopite schists. The chemistry produces emeralds coloured principally by chromium with a vanadium component and a small but measurable iron contribution. The result is a colour generally described as medium green with a slight bluish modifier, with very slightly less saturation than the most highly saturated Colombian Muzo material but a clean and attractive profile in its own right. Stones in the better tiers show the characteristic mid-green that the trade has come to associate with the Belmont source.

Clarity

Like all commercial emeralds, Belmont stones are typically Type III in clarity classification, meaning that visible inclusions are characteristic of the species. Belmont emerald inclusions tend to be three-phase fluid inclusions, biotite flakes, and the characteristic jardin internal landscape that Brazilian and Colombian emeralds share. Cleaner Belmont material is achievable in smaller sizes; large clean stones are exceptional in any emerald source.

Treatment

Belmont emeralds are routinely clarity-enhanced with cedarwood oil or with comparable natural-resin fillings, in keeping with universal commercial practice for the species. The treatment is disclosed on Belmont mine documentation and on any subsequent laboratory report. Buyers should expect treatment as the standard condition; untreated Belmont emeralds, while occasionally available, command premium pricing and require laboratory confirmation of treatment status.

Documentation

The defining feature of the Belmont designation is the supply-chain documentation that Mineração Belmont provides with its production. Stones leaving the mine carry company paperwork identifying mine provenance, processing history, and treatment. For higher-value pieces, secondary documentation from GIA, AGL, Gübelin, or SSEF can confirm Brazilian origin attribution and treatment status independently.

Comparison with Colombian and Zambian emeralds

Compared with fine Colombian Muzo material, Belmont emeralds are typically slightly less saturated and slightly more bluish in hue. Compared with Zambian Kagem material, they are typically warmer in tone, with less of the cool blue-green character that distinguishes the best Zambian production. The Belmont colour sits in a middle range that some buyers find more universally wearable than the strongest Colombian saturation, particularly in pieces designed for daylight visibility and for skin-tone compatibility across a broad client range.

Trade and pricing

Pricing for Belmont emeralds tracks the international coloured-stone market for Brazilian-origin emerald, generally below comparable-quality Colombian Muzo material at the highest tiers but above commodity emerald from less reputable sources. Mid-grade Belmont material in the 1-to-3-carat range is widely available through reputable dealers; significant pieces above 5 carats are scarcer and are typically allocated to long-standing trade clients of the mine.

In the trade

For brands and dealers seeking Brazilian-origin emerald with credible documentation, Belmont is the standard reference. The mine's responsible-sourcing credentials, the consistency of its production, and the integrated nature of its operation make it a particular choice for buyers prioritising traceability. Belmont stones in our own inventory typically carry both the mine documentation and, where the stone size warrants, an independent laboratory report.
