A bombing machine — also known as a bombing unit — is an industrial electroplating apparatus used in jewellery manufacturing to deposit a thin, uniform layer of metal onto finished or semi-finished components, producing a mirror-bright, high-gloss surface. The process is standard practice in high-volume production environments, where consistency and throughput demand results that mechanical polishing alone cannot reliably achieve. The term derives from the immersive, batch-processing nature of the operation: multiple components are submerged simultaneously in a heated electrolytic solution and subjected to a controlled electrical current that drives metal ions onto their surfaces.
The Electroplating Principle
Bombing operates on the same fundamental electrochemical principle as all electroplating: an electrical circuit is established between an anode (the source metal) and a cathode (the jewellery component to be plated), both immersed in an electrolytic bath containing dissolved metal salts. When current flows, metal ions migrate from the solution and deposit as a coherent, adherent layer on the cathode surface. The thickness of the deposit is governed by current density, bath temperature, solution concentration, and immersion time — all of which are calibrated to specification in a production setting.
In jewellery applications, the metals most commonly deposited via bombing are gold (in various karatages and colour tones), rhodium, and occasionally silver or palladium. Rhodium bombing, in particular, is widely used to impart a hard, highly reflective white finish to white-gold and silver pieces, and to protect against tarnish and surface wear.
Chemistry: Cyanide-Based and Modern Alternatives
Historically, bombing baths relied on cyanide-based electrolyte solutions — most commonly gold potassium cyanide or silver potassium cyanide — because cyanide complexes yield exceptionally stable, bright, and adherent deposits. These solutions produce a surface quality that remained difficult to replicate with alternative chemistries for many decades. However, cyanide compounds are acutely toxic, requiring stringent ventilation, personal protective equipment, waste-treatment infrastructure, and regulatory compliance. Their use is subject to strict controls in most jurisdictions.
From the late twentieth century onward, the jewellery industry progressively adopted non-cyanide electrolyte formulations — including sulphite-based, thiosulphate-based, and proprietary organic-complex systems — that offer substantially improved safety profiles. While early non-cyanide baths were criticised for inferior deposit brightness or adhesion, modern formulations have narrowed the performance gap considerably, and many production facilities now operate entirely without cyanide chemistry.
Equipment and Configuration
A bombing machine typically comprises a heated tank or series of tanks fabricated from chemically resistant materials (polypropylene or titanium-lined steel are common), a rectifier supplying low-voltage direct current at precisely regulated amperage, temperature-control elements, and agitation systems to ensure even ion distribution around complex component geometries. In automated or semi-automated configurations, barrel plating attachments allow small components — findings, clasps, chain links — to be tumbled continuously within the bath, ensuring uniform coverage on all surfaces without manual repositioning.
Pre-treatment stages are integral to the process. Components must be thoroughly degreased, cleaned ultrasonically, and in some cases activated by brief immersion in an acid or electrolytic strike bath before entering the main plating solution. Adhesion failures almost invariably trace back to inadequate surface preparation rather than deficiencies in the plating chemistry itself.
Role in Jewellery Manufacturing
Bombing machines are standard capital equipment in medium-to-large jewellery manufacturing facilities, casting houses, and findings suppliers. Their principal advantage over mechanical polishing — buffing, burnishing, or barrelling — is the ability to deposit metal uniformly into recessed areas, engraved details, and filigree work that abrasive or contact-polishing methods cannot reach. The resulting surface is not merely bright but chemically and physically distinct from the substrate: a rhodium-bombed white-gold ring, for instance, presents a surface hardness and reflectivity that the gold alloy itself does not possess.
Conversely, bombing machines are rarely found in small independent bench workshops. The capital cost, chemical handling requirements, effluent disposal obligations, and regulatory burden make them impractical at low production volumes. Small workshops typically outsource plating to specialist finishing houses, or use pen-plating and brush-plating tools for localised touch-up work.
Quality and Trade Considerations
The thickness of a bombed deposit is measured in microns (µm). Industry norms for decorative gold plating on jewellery typically range from 0.5 µm to 2.5 µm, with heavier deposits — sometimes termed gold filled or gold overlay when they meet defined thickness and weight ratios — commanding higher durability and price. Rhodium deposits are generally applied at 0.05 µm to 0.5 µm; thicker rhodium can become brittle and prone to cracking under flexion.
Disclosure of plating is a trade and regulatory matter of some importance. In many markets, a plated article must not be represented as solid metal of the deposited type. Hallmarking legislation in the United Kingdom and European Union, and Federal Trade Commission guidelines in the United States, set out specific terminology and minimum thickness thresholds that govern how plated jewellery may be described and sold.
