It forms part of the celebrated cluster of high-altitude deposits responsible for producing what the international gem trade regards as the world's finest blue sapphires. Stones from this locality share the defining characteristics of Kashmir-origin material: a saturated, slightly violet-tinged blue of extraordinary depth, a characteristic velvety or sleepy luminosity arising from fine rutile silk inclusions, and a colour that appears remarkably stable across varying light conditions. Though Brari Anchu is rarely named individually in auction catalogues — which tend to cite simply "Kashmir" as the origin designation — its contribution to the historical Kashmir sapphire supply is documented in gemmological and geological surveys of the region.

Geological Setting

The sapphire deposits of Paddar occur within Precambrian metamorphic rocks of the Higher Himalayan Crystalline Sequence, where corundum crystallised in marble and calc-silicate horizons under conditions of regional metamorphism. The Zanskar range, which forms the geological backbone of this part of Kashmir, provided the tectonic and thermal environment necessary for the growth of gem-quality corundum. Brari Anchu sits at an elevation exceeding 4,000 metres, a factor that has historically restricted mining to brief summer seasons and contributed to the scarcity of material reaching the market. The deposit is a secondary eluvial and residual placer concentration derived from the weathering of the primary marble host, meaning sapphires are recovered from both in-situ rock and from loose gravels and soils immediately downslope of the source.

The trace-element chemistry of Kashmir sapphires — characterised by elevated iron and vanadium relative to many Sri Lankan stones, combined with relatively low iron compared to Australian or Thai material — produces the distinctive colour that has made the origin a benchmark for blue sapphires globally. Stones from Brari Anchu conform to this geochemical profile, and modern laboratory origin determination relies on this chemical fingerprint alongside characteristic inclusion assemblages.

History of Mining

The discovery of sapphires in the Paddar region is conventionally dated to around 1881, when a landslide near Sumjam exposed corundum-bearing rock. The Maharaja of Kashmir quickly asserted state control over the deposits, and organised extraction began under official supervision. The period from approximately 1882 to the early 1890s represented peak production, during which significant quantities of fine material entered the market through Srinagar and Lahore, eventually reaching European trading centres. Brari Anchu was among the localities worked during this era, alongside Sumjam and other nearby sites collectively referred to in period accounts as the Kashmir mines.

By the early twentieth century, the most accessible gem-bearing ground had been substantially worked out, and production became increasingly sporadic. Various attempts at renewed systematic mining were made through the twentieth century under different administrative authorities, but none succeeded in replicating the output of the original discovery period. The remote terrain, extreme altitude, short working season, and difficult logistics have consistently frustrated large-scale operations. As a result, the total volume of gem-quality sapphire that can be attributed with confidence to Brari Anchu and the surrounding Paddar localities is modest relative to the enormous market premium the origin commands.

Gemmological Characteristics

Sapphires associated with the Brari Anchu locality exhibit the suite of properties that define Kashmir-origin material in laboratory assessment and trade evaluation:

  • Colour: A medium to medium-dark blue with a slight violet modifier, often described in trade parlance as cornflower blue, though the finest stones tend toward a richer, more saturated tone than that term strictly implies. The colour appears consistent under both daylight-equivalent and incandescent illumination, a quality attributed to the stone's particular iron and vanadium balance.
  • Velvety appearance: The most prized Kashmir sapphires display a soft, diffused luminosity — described variously as velvety, sleepy, or silky — caused by the scattering of light from dense clouds of fine rutile needles and partially healed fractures. This optical effect distinguishes them from the brighter, more transparent appearance of many Sri Lankan or Burmese stones.
  • Inclusions: Characteristic inclusions include fine silk (rutile needles in oriented arrays), negative crystals, two-phase inclusions, and occasionally mineral crystals consistent with the marble host environment. The silk is typically finer and more evenly distributed than in many other sapphire origins, contributing to the velvety effect without significantly reducing transparency in the finest specimens.
  • Fluorescence: Kashmir sapphires typically show weak to inert fluorescence under long-wave ultraviolet, a useful but not definitive indicator in origin assessment.
  • Treatment status: The great majority of Kashmir sapphires that appear at auction or in specialist trade are unheated. This is both a historical reality — the stones were traded before heat treatment became routine practice — and a significant value driver in the contemporary market. Laboratory confirmation of no indications of heating is now a standard requirement for high-value Kashmir sapphires.

Origin Determination and Laboratory Assessment

Because "Kashmir" as an origin designation commands a substantial premium over comparable sapphires from Sri Lanka, Burma, or Madagascar, rigorous laboratory origin determination is essential for any significant stone. The leading gemmological laboratories — including the Gübelin Gem Lab, SSEF Swiss Gemmological Institute, GIA, and Lotus Gemology — assess Kashmir origin through a combination of chemical analysis (laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, or LA-ICP-MS), spectroscopic examination, and inclusion characterisation. The specific sub-locality of Brari Anchu is not typically distinguished from other Paddar-area deposits in laboratory reports; the designation "Kashmir, India" encompasses the broader regional origin.

It is worth noting that the gemmological definition of Kashmir origin is based on geological and geochemical criteria rather than administrative boundaries, and that origin reports represent a scientific opinion rather than a certainty. The consistency of the Kashmir geochemical and inclusion signature across the Paddar deposits — including Brari Anchu — means that locality-level distinction within Kashmir is rarely attempted or required by the market.

Market Context

Kashmir sapphires occupy the apex of the blue sapphire market. Fine unheated stones with credible laboratory reports routinely achieve prices per carat that exceed comparable Burmese or Sri Lankan material, and exceptional examples have set per-carat records at the major auction houses. The premium reflects both the intrinsic quality of the finest material and the extreme scarcity of new production: the Paddar mines, including Brari Anchu, have not produced significant commercial quantities in recent decades, meaning that the market is supplied almost entirely by stones that have circulated since the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, or by occasional small parcels from sporadic modern working.

For collectors and investors, provenance documentation — where it exists — adds further value. Stones that can be traced to early Kashmir trading houses, to notable collections, or to historic auction appearances carry a documentary record that reinforces the origin attribution and situates the gem within the broader history of the Kashmir mines.
