A chasing hammer is a lightweight, purpose-built striking tool used by metalsmiths to drive chasing tools and repoussé punches across sheet metal with controlled, rhythmic force. Distinguished from general-purpose hammers by its small, slightly domed face, slender neck, and long handle, the chasing hammer is engineered for finesse rather than brute impact. Typical weights range from approximately 60 to 120 grams — light enough to be wielded for hours without undue fatigue, yet sufficiently substantial to transmit consistent energy to the tool beneath it.
Design and Construction
The head of a chasing hammer is forged from tool steel and finished to a smooth, gently convex face. The convexity is deliberate: a perfectly flat face risks leaving edge marks on the struck tool's shank, while a domed face delivers force to the centre of the shank cleanly. The poll (the rear of the head) is often rounded or ball-shaped, serving as a secondary striking surface for lighter, more localised work.
The handle is characteristically long — commonly 25 to 35 centimetres — and tapers towards the head. This length encourages a loose, wrist-driven stroke rather than an arm-driven one, allowing the smith to develop a rapid, almost reflexive rhythm. Handle materials include turned hardwood (traditionally hickory, ash, or boxwood) and, in contemporary tools, fibreglass or resin composites that resist splitting and absorb vibration. The balance point is intentionally set close to the head so that the hammer's weight does the work, minimising muscular effort per stroke.
Use in Chasing and Repoussé
In chasing, the hammer strikes a succession of hardened steel punches held against the front face of a metal sheet, driving fine lines, textures, and contours into the surface. In repoussé, the complementary technique, the work is reversed and pushed from behind to raise forms in relief; the chasing hammer is equally at home in both processes, since both demand the same controlled, repetitive stroke. The smith typically holds the chasing tool loosely between the fingers of one hand — allowing it to rebound slightly after each blow — while the hammer hand maintains a steady, pendulum-like swing. Experienced practitioners develop a cadence of several strikes per second, a rhythm that is as much tactile as it is visual.
Because the hammer contacts the chasing tool rather than the workpiece directly, the face need not be polished to a mirror finish; however, any roughness or pitting on the face will eventually batter the tops of tools unevenly, reducing control. Quality chasing hammers are therefore maintained with fine abrasive paper and kept free of rust.
Selection and Quality
The criteria most experienced metalsmiths apply when selecting a chasing hammer are balance, weight, and handle feel — in roughly that order. A hammer that is too heavy accelerates fatigue and reduces sensitivity; one that is too light demands excessive muscular effort to generate sufficient impact. Within the 60–120 gram range, individual preference varies considerably depending on the scale of the work and the smith's hand size and technique.
Quality examples are drop-forged from high-carbon or alloy tool steel, with heads that have been properly hardened and tempered to resist deformation at the face without becoming brittle. Handles should be firmly seated and, in wooden examples, free of short grain that might cause splitting under prolonged use. Several European and Japanese makers have long-standing reputations for well-balanced chasing hammers; the tool is also produced to a functional standard by numerous general jewellery-tool suppliers.

The chasing hammer occupies a modest but indispensable place in the metalsmith's toolkit. It is not a tool associated with stone-setting or bench jewellery in the conventional sense, but is essential to the decorative metalwork traditions — repoussé, chasing, and related surface-enrichment techniques — that underpin much of the finest historical and contemporary hollowware, jewellery, and sculptural metalwork. Its continued use in an era of laser engravers and CNC milling reflects the irreplaceable quality of hand-worked surface texture that only direct tool-to-metal contact can produce.
