Trapiche Emerald — Colombian, Lab-Certified
- Key concepts
- trapiche emerald, colombian trapiche, six-spoke emerald, phenomenal emerald, muzo trapiche
Trapiche emerald is a phenomenal variety showing six dark spokes radiating from a central core, formed by carbon and other inclusions captured during crystal growth. The pattern resembles the Spanish word trapiche — the wheel of a sugar mill. Trapiche emerald occurs almost exclusively in Colombia (Muzo, Coscuez, and a few other deposits) and is a small-volume collector category distinct from standard Colombian emerald. Skyjems does not currently hold trapiche emerald in primary inventory.
Why trapiche is its own category
The six-spoke pattern is structural — it cannot be enhanced or simulated by treatment. The pattern's clarity (clean spokes vs muddied), symmetry, and balance with the central green core determine pricing. Trapiche is cut as a flat slice (cabochon or polished plate) to display the pattern face-up; faceted cuts are uncommon. The variety is sold for its phenomenal character, not for the colour saturation that drives standard emerald pricing.
Origin
Trapiche emerald occurs almost exclusively in Colombia. Lab letters confirm origin and pattern type; treatment is typically "no oil" because the cabochon cut and surface character do not require enhancement.
Five-step evaluation
(1) Lab confirms variety = trapiche emerald, origin = Colombia, treatment = none; (2) six spokes are present, clean, and symmetric; (3) central green core is well-saturated and not muddy; (4) cut maximises face-up pattern visibility; (5) carat weight matches the lab.
Skyjems sourcing approach
Trapiche emerald is curator-sourced through Bogotá dealer relationships. Lead times are 4–12 weeks for documented requests.
