Principal Origins
The three most commercially important sources are Colombia, Zambia, and Brazil, each producing stones with recognisable characteristics:
- Colombia — The Muzo, Chivor, and Coscuez mines yield stones prized for a warm, slightly yellowish green with exceptional colour saturation. Colombian emeralds coloured by chromium alone are widely regarded as the benchmark for the species.
- Zambia — The Kagem mine in the Copperbelt produces emeralds with a cooler, slightly bluish green tone and, on average, better clarity than Colombian material. Zambian stones have risen substantially in market esteem since the 1990s.
- Brazil — The Itabira and Nova Era regions supply emeralds coloured by vanadium as well as chromium; purists once debated whether vanadium-coloured stones qualified as true emeralds, though the ICA and GIA now accept vanadium colouration as sufficient for the emerald designation.
Significant production also comes from Zimbabwe (Sandawana), Ethiopia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, each with distinct gemmological signatures identifiable by experienced laboratories.
Treatments and Their Implications for Care
The single most important practical fact about emerald — whether worn as a May birthstone or purchased for any other reason — is that virtually all emeralds on the market have been clarity-enhanced. The standard treatment involves filling surface-reaching fractures with colourless or near-colourless oils, resins, or waxes to reduce the visual impact of the jardin and improve apparent transparency. Cedar oil was the traditional medium; synthetic resins such as Opticon and proprietary epoxy-based fillers are now common. The GIA grades filler presence on a scale from "none" to "faint," "minor," "moderate," and "significant," and major laboratories including Gübelin, SSEF, and AGL provide comparable assessments.
Because these fillers are organic and thermally sensitive, the following care rules are non-negotiable:
- No ultrasonic cleaning — cavitation dislodges filler and can propagate existing fractures.
- No steam cleaning — heat degrades oils and resins, causing whitish hazing within fractures.
- No prolonged immersion in solvents — acetone, alcohol, and even some commercial jewellery dips will dissolve organic fillers.
- Warm water and a soft brush — the only recommended cleaning method for mounted emeralds.
- Re-oiling — stones with significant filler may benefit from periodic re-treatment by a qualified gemmologist or jeweller, particularly after re-polishing or re-setting.
Unenhanced emeralds — those with no detectable filler — are exceptionally rare at fine-colour grades and command substantial premiums, sometimes multiples of the price of treated equivalents of comparable appearance. Laboratory reports specifically noting "no indications of clarity enhancement" are therefore highly significant in the trade.

For a consumer selecting an emerald as a May birthstone gift, the practical hierarchy of quality factors runs: colour first, then origin (for connoisseurs), then clarity, then treatment degree. A fine Colombian emerald of vivid, slightly bluish-to-pure green with only minor oiling and acceptable clarity will outperform a heavily included, heavily oiled stone of any origin regardless of carat weight.
