The Gem-A Pocket Gemmology Kit is a curated set of portable optical instruments assembled by the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) to enable preliminary gemstone identification in the field, at trade fairs, or at the point of purchase — wherever a fully equipped laboratory is unavailable. In its standard configuration the kit comprises four essential tools: a 10× achromatic loupe, a dichroscope, a Chelsea colour filter, and a pocket ultraviolet lamp. Together these instruments allow a trained gemmologist to perform a rapid but meaningful battery of optical tests covering magnification, pleochroism, selective colour absorption, and fluorescence response.

Contents and Their Functions

  • 10× loupe. The foundation of any field examination. A quality achromatic, aplanatic loupe corrects for both chromatic and spherical aberration, delivering a flat, colour-true field of view. At 10× magnification the gemmologist can assess surface finish, inclusions, doubling of back facets (indicative of birefringence), naturals, and signs of fracture-filling or surface coating.
  • Dichroscope. A calcite-prism or polarising dichroscope splits the light passing through a coloured stone into two rays vibrating at right angles, revealing pleochroism — the property by which anisotropic gems display different body colours in different crystallographic directions. Distinguishing the strong trichroism of tanzanite from the dichroism of blue sapphire, or confirming the pleochroism of alexandrite, are classic applications.
  • Chelsea colour filter. Originally developed at Chelsea College of Arts and Crafts in the 1930s in collaboration with Gem-A, this filter transmits only deep red and yellow-green wavelengths. Under the filter, emerald (coloured by chromium) appears red, while most green glass and green tourmaline remain green — a rapid, if not infallible, screening test. The filter also assists in separating certain synthetic blue spinels from aquamarine and in identifying some dyed stones.
  • Pocket UV lamp. Compact UV lamps typically emit longwave ultraviolet radiation (approximately 365 nm), and some models include a shortwave (approximately 254 nm) mode. Fluorescence response — its presence, colour, and intensity — contributes to identification and, critically, to the detection of treatments: the blue-white fluorescence of filler resins in fracture-filled rubies, the inert response of many synthetic sapphires under shortwave UV, and the characteristic orange fluorescence of natural hyalite opal are familiar examples.

Intended Users and Context of Use

The kit is standard-issue equipment for candidates enrolled in Gem-A's Fellowship (FGA) programme, who are expected to develop fluency with these instruments before progressing to refractometer, spectroscope, and polariscope work. Beyond the classroom, the kit is widely used by trade buyers conducting on-site evaluation at gem markets — notably in Bangkok, Jaipur, and Colombo — where access to laboratory instruments is impractical and rapid screening decisions must be made. Auction-house specialists and estate jewellery dealers similarly rely on pocket kits for preliminary assessment prior to formal laboratory submission.

It is important to understand the kit's scope and limits. The instruments it contains are screening tools, not definitive identification devices. A Chelsea filter result, for instance, is suggestive rather than conclusive: synthetic emerald also transmits red through the filter, and some natural emeralds coloured partly by vanadium may show a weaker red response. Conclusions drawn from pocket-kit examination should be treated as working hypotheses to be confirmed by refractometry, spectroscopy, or, where origin and treatment disclosure are commercially material, by an accredited laboratory such as Gübelin, SSEF, or GIA.

In the Trade

The Gem-A kit has become something of a professional signifier in the coloured-stone trade: its presence in a buyer's breast pocket communicates a baseline of formal gemmological training. Competing instrument suppliers offer broadly similar field sets, but the Gem-A-branded kit retains particular recognition in British and Commonwealth markets, reflecting the Association's long-standing role as the primary gemmological examining body in those regions.
