GJX (Gem and Jewelry Exchange)

GJX (Gem and Jewelry Exchange)

A flagship tent show at the heart of Tucson's annual gem-trade week

Trade & market termsView in dictionary · 470 words

The Gem and Jewelry Exchange, universally known in the trade as GJX, is one of the principal wholesale venues of the annual Tucson gem-trade fortnight, held each February in Tucson, Arizona. Occupying a large climate-controlled tent complex situated directly across from the Tucson Convention Center, GJX draws several hundred exhibitors from across the globe and attracts tens of thousands of trade buyers, gemmologists, and collectors over the course of its run during the first week of February.

Context within the Tucson Shows

GJX does not stand alone. It operates concurrently with the AGTA GemFair — held inside the Tucson Convention Center itself — and with the long-established Tucson Gem and Mineral Show at the Tucson Convention Center's adjacent halls, as well as dozens of satellite shows spread across hotels and venues throughout the city. Taken together, this constellation of events constitutes the largest gem and mineral trade gathering in the world, drawing participants from virtually every significant producing country and consuming market. GJX's physical proximity to the AGTA GemFair means that serious trade buyers routinely move between the two venues on the same day, making the immediate neighbourhood of the Convention Center the densest concentration of gem commerce on the planet for that brief period each year.

Merchandise and Exhibitor Profile

GJX caters to a broad cross-section of the coloured-stone and jewellery trade. Exhibitors typically include:

  • Coloured gemstone dealers offering both calibrated commercial goods and fine individual specimens
  • Bead and strand merchants presenting tourmaline, aquamarine, garnet, and other species in faceted and smooth forms
  • Pearl wholesalers, including Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian, and freshwater producers
  • Finished and semi-finished jewellery manufacturers, particularly those serving the mid-to-upper wholesale tier
  • Rough and mineral specimen dealers occupying a portion of the floor

The show's tent format, while less formal than a convention-centre hall, accommodates a high density of booths and has become a recognised setting for significant wholesale transactions. Many long-standing dealer relationships are renewed or initiated at GJX each year, and the show functions as an important price-discovery mechanism for coloured gemstones at the opening of the calendar year.

Trade Significance

For buyers and sellers in the coloured-gemstone industry, attendance at GJX — alongside AGTA GemFair and the broader Tucson circuit — is effectively a professional obligation. The concentration of supply, the opportunity to compare goods across many origins and qualities in a single location, and the informal deal-making that characterises the tent environment make GJX a venue whose influence on annual pricing and sourcing decisions extends well beyond the days of the show itself. Gemmological laboratories, industry associations, and auction specialists also maintain a presence during Tucson week, further elevating the event's role as a gathering point for the trade's broader community.
