Imahashi machine

Imahashi machine

A Japanese precision faceting machine widely used for coloured stones

The Imahashi machine is a precision faceting machine of Japanese origin, built since the late twentieth century and widely adopted by professional cutters in Asia and parts of Europe for coloured-stone work. It is a master-and-mast faceting head with mechanical index gear, calibrated cheater, fine-thread height adjustment and an integrated lap and water-feed assembly, designed to deliver the dimensional repeatability that competition-grade faceting requires.

Imahashi machines are commonly compared to other commercial faceting machines such as the Facetron, Ultratec, Polymetric and Fac-Ette systems. Cutters who work with the Imahashi tend to praise its rigid quill, smooth height movement and stable mast geometry; the machine has a particular following among Japanese, Sri Lankan and Thai cutters working high-value coloured material such as fine sapphire and spinel.

For the trade the practical relevance is that an Imahashi-cut stone, like any precision-faceted gem, is identifiable by tight meet-points, sharp facet junctions, balanced symmetry and clean polish. These are characteristics of the cutter's skill and discipline rather than the machine itself, but the platform supports that level of work.
