Inhorgenta Munich

Inhorgenta Munich

The principal German-language jewellery and watch trade fair

Trade & market termsView in dictionary · 540 words

Inhorgenta Munich is the largest jewellery, watch, gemstone and silverware trade fair in the German-speaking world and one of the principal European jewellery industry events alongside Vicenzaoro in Italy and JCK Las Vegas in the United States. The fair has been held in Munich since 1973 and runs annually, typically in February, at the Messe München exhibition complex. It is owned and operated by Messe München GmbH, the same trade-fair organisation that operates Bauma, IFAT and other major German trade fairs.

Scale and scope

Inhorgenta in recent editions has hosted approximately 1,000 to 1,200 exhibitors from approximately 40 to 50 countries, with attendee counts in the 25,000 to 30,000 range. The exhibition covers fine jewellery, watches, gemstones, silverware, watch and jewellery technology, and packaging and display. The exhibitor base is concentrated in German, Italian, Swiss, French and other European production, with significant participation from Indian, Thai, Hong Kong and other international suppliers serving the European market.

The fair's halls are typically organised by category, with separate sections for fine jewellery, fashion jewellery, watches, gemstones, silver and giftware, and supplier categories including findings, machinery and packaging. Special exhibition zones for emerging designers, sustainability programmes and themed showcases vary by edition. The fair also operates a substantive seminar and education programme alongside the exhibition floor.

Position in the European trade fair calendar

Inhorgenta sits early in the European jewellery trade-fair calendar, typically held in late February. The position immediately precedes Vicenzaoro's January edition (which has rotated dates over the years and now sometimes precedes rather than follows Inhorgenta) and the spring Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, and it sits between the Tucson gem shows in early February and the major spring buying season in March and April. The fair functions as a principal buying event for German, Austrian and Swiss retail and wholesale jewellers, and as a sourcing and trend-setting event for international participants entering the German-speaking market.

Trade significance

For German-speaking-market participants, Inhorgenta is a primary annual event for sourcing, supplier-relationship maintenance and trend identification. The German jewellery retail market is the largest in continental Europe by revenue, and Inhorgenta is the principal point of trade-channel orientation for the season. International suppliers seeking to develop German-market presence typically participate in Inhorgenta as a baseline market-entry step.

Beyond the immediate buying function, the fair operates significant secondary functions including industry-association meetings (the Bundesverband der Schmuck- und Uhrenindustrie, the German jewellery industry trade association, holds significant activity around the fair), award programmes (the Inhorgenta Award for design and brand innovation), and press and media coverage. The fair has historically been an important platform for German design houses (Niessing, Wempe, Heinz Mayer, and many others) and for the broader European jewellery design community.

For visitors

Visitors to Inhorgenta should plan for a multi-day visit, with the larger halls requiring sustained attention to cover thoroughly. The fair operates pre-registration through its website and is open primarily to trade visitors with proof of professional engagement in the jewellery and watch industries. The Munich location, with extensive city-centre hotel inventory and direct international airport connections, supports international visitor flow, and the fair provides English-language services alongside German-language operations.
