Intense Green

Intense Green

A saturation descriptor used for emerald and other green gemstones

Colour & clarity gradingView in dictionary · 175 words

Intense Green is a saturation descriptor used in coloured-stone grading and trade language for emerald, tsavorite, demantoid garnet, chrome diopside and other green stones in the upper part of the saturation range. The term is not strictly standardised across laboratories: AGL, Lotus Gemology, Gübelin, SSEF and the GIA coloured-stone framework each use their own conventions, with "intense" generally sitting in the strong-to-vivid range of saturation tiers below the most concentrated descriptor on the relevant scale.

In emerald specifically the trade applies "Intense Green" to stones with the saturated, slightly bluish-green appearance characteristic of fine Muzo or Chivor Colombian material, although the term is not exclusive to Colombian origin. Zambian, Brazilian and Afghan emeralds can also reach saturation that warrants the descriptor.

For the working dealer the term is most useful when paired with a specific laboratory reference or a colour-comparison standard, since the unanchored phrase carries marketing weight without grading discipline.
