Iranian 18K Lion
Iranian 18K Lion
The lion-figure hallmark applied to 750-fineness gold under the Iranian Standard
The Iranian 18K lion is the official hallmark applied to gold articles of 750-thousandths fineness (18 karat) under the Iranian Standard hallmarking system. The mark depicts a lion, drawn from Persian heraldic tradition, and is applied at recognised assay centres administered by the Iran National Standardisation Organisation. The lion figure has been associated with Iranian state symbolism for centuries, appearing on coinage, royal heraldry and architecture, and its use on the gold hallmark links the modern assay system to that older visual continuity.
Application and meaning
An item marked with the Iranian 18K lion has been formally assayed and confirmed to meet the 750-thousandths fineness threshold. The mark is typically accompanied by a maker's identification and, depending on the period and the assay centre, by additional symbols or numerals indicating the office of assay. The 750 fineness is the same standard as 18-karat gold elsewhere; the alloy contains 75 per cent fine gold by weight, with the balance composed of copper, silver, zinc or other alloying metals depending on the colour required.
Position in the wider Iranian hallmark system
The 18K lion sits alongside marks for other karat declarations in the Iranian system, particularly 21-karat (875 fineness) and 22-karat (916 fineness). In the domestic Iranian jewellery market the 21-karat and 18-karat ranges are both common, with 21-karat dominating much of the bridal and traditional jewellery market and 18-karat used for more design-led contemporary pieces. The lion as a heraldic device appears in different forms on the marks for different fineness levels, with the 18-karat lion having its own specific configuration distinct from those used for higher karats.
Trade significance
For dealers handling Iranian-origin jewellery, the 18K lion is a useful confirmation of fineness for material that left the country with proper documentation. International trade in Iranian-marked jewellery, however, is constrained by the broader sanctions framework, particularly US sanctions, and dealers should be aware of the relevant compliance requirements before handling Iranian-origin pieces in markets affected by those rules.
