Jacob Arabo Five Time Zone

Jacob Arabo Five Time Zone

The signature multi-dial wristwatch that defined Jacob & Co.'s hip-hop era

Famous jewellers & jewellery housesView in dictionary · 380 words

The Five Time Zone watch, introduced by Jacob & Co. in the late 1990s and refined over successive editions through the 2000s, is the model most closely identified with the brand's hip-hop-era cultural moment. The watch was the principal vehicle for the "Jacob the Jeweler" reference that runs through hip-hop lyrics from 1998 onwards and remains, in collector terms, the iconic Jacob & Co. piece of the period.

Construction

The watch is built around a central main dial showing local time, with four smaller subsidiary dials at the four cardinal points of the case showing the time in four other selected zones, typically Tokyo, Paris, Moscow and Los Angeles in addition to New York. Each subsidiary dial is driven by an independent quartz movement, and the case is generously sized (typically 47 mm to 56 mm in diameter) to accommodate both the dial layout and the deep diamond pavé that became a defining feature of the model.

The stock pavé versions carry between 4 and 12 carats of round-brilliant diamonds in the bezel, case-side, lugs and bracelet, with custom commissions running well into the multiple tens of carats. Coloured-diamond and coloured-stone variants (sapphire, ruby, emerald, fancy yellow diamond) appeared from the early 2000s, and full-pavé cases in white or yellow gold with rainbow sapphire bezels are the most-cited custom configurations.

Cultural moment

The Five Time Zone was adopted by hip-hop artists in the late 1990s as a fixture of the genre's evolving jewellery vocabulary, sitting alongside the Cuban-link chain, the iced-out pendant and the diamond grill. The watch's references include lyrics from Jay-Z, The Notorious B.I.G., 50 Cent, Cam'ron, Lil Wayne, Sean Combs, Drake, Kanye West and many others, and "a Five Time Zone" became, for a stretch of years, a generally understood shorthand for arrival in the hip-hop wealth-display canon.

Position in the brand history

The Five Time Zone has continued in production through several editions and case generations, alongside the brand's later move toward serious technical watchmaking with the Astronomia and Twin Turbo lines. From a collector standpoint the original 1998-2008 generation Five Time Zones, particularly examples with named-buyer provenance, are the strongest secondary-market segment within the broader Jacob & Co. catalogue.
