JAR Place Vendôme 7
JAR Place Vendôme 7
The Paris boutique of Joel Arthur Rosenthal
The address 7 Place Vendôme in Paris is the boutique and atelier of JAR, the maison founded by Joel Arthur Rosenthal in 1977. Of all the addresses on the Place Vendôme, the historic centre of French fine jewellery, number 7 is the most reticent. The shopfront is small, the window display typically consists of a single flower in a glass vase or a piece of lacquerware, and the boutique itself is open only by appointment.
Place Vendôme
The Place Vendôme was laid out by Jules Hardouin-Mansart for Louis XIV at the end of the seventeenth century. The square has been the centre of the French fine-jewellery trade since the nineteenth century, with houses such as Boucheron, Chaumet, Van Cleef & Arpels and Mauboussin establishing themselves on or immediately around the square. By the time JAR opened in 1977, the Place was the most prestigious commercial address for haute joaillerie in the world.
The Boutique
JAR occupies a small ground-floor space at number 7 with the atelier on upper floors. The boutique frontage is intentionally understated. The window display rotates infrequently and sometimes shows nothing related to jewellery at all. Inside, the space is small and dimly lit, with showcases of dark wood and patinated metal. There is no broad retail counter or seated salon of the kind seen in the major Place Vendôme houses; clients are seen one at a time, and pieces are brought out for viewing rather than displayed openly.
Reception and Discretion
The Vendôme address gave JAR membership of the established haute joaillerie tradition while the maison's manner of operating, with its reticence and its appointment-only access, set it apart from its more public neighbours. Joel Rosenthal has consistently declined to expand into a second location, to franchise, or to license the JAR name. The address has therefore come to function not only as a postal designation but as an integral part of the maison's identity, frequently named alongside the JAR initials in trade and auction discourse.
The Vendôme Context
JAR's neighbours on and around the Place Vendôme include Boucheron at number 26, Chaumet at number 12, Van Cleef & Arpels at number 22, Cartier on rue de la Paix at number 13 and Mauboussin at number 20. The maison's choice to take a small footprint at one of the most prestigious addresses in the world but to operate within it as quietly as possible has been integral to its standing in the international trade.
