JCK Las Vegas

JCK Las Vegas

The principal annual jewellery trade show in North America

Legend, lore & famous stonesView in dictionary · 568 words

JCK Las Vegas is the largest jewellery trade show in North America and one of the largest in the world. Held annually in late May or early June at the Sands Expo Convention Center and the adjoining Venetian Resort on the Las Vegas Strip, the show draws thousands of exhibitors representing the major segments of the jewellery industry and tens of thousands of trade-only visitors from across the United States, Canada and the wider international trade. JCK Las Vegas is owned and operated by RX Global, the events business formerly known as Reed Exhibitions.

History

The first JCK Las Vegas show was held in 1992, organised by the Jewelers' Circular Keystone publication that had become the dominant trade journal of the American jewellery industry following the 1977 merger of The Jewelers' Circular and Keystone. The Las Vegas show was conceived as a national centralised buying event that would consolidate what had been a fragmented series of regional and city-level trade shows. Within a decade the show had eclipsed its rivals to become the dominant date in the American trade calendar, and the principal annual occasion at which national buying decisions are made by American retailers.

Format and Scope

The show occupies the full Sands Expo Convention Center floor and adjacent Venetian ballroom space across approximately one week, with several distinct exhibition zones organised by product category and price point. The principal categories include diamonds, coloured stones, fine jewellery manufacturing, watches, designer jewellery, fashion jewellery, technology and supplies, packaging and store services. The Luxury show, formerly held earlier in the same week, has been integrated into the main event in recent years.

Educational programming runs in parallel through a substantial JCK Las Vegas conference programme covering market trends, supply chain issues, lab-grown diamond developments, retail technology, and merchandising. Industry award programmes, including the Jewelers of America awards and several JCK and trade-press recognitions, are typically presented during the show week.

Industry Significance

For the American jewellery industry the show functions as both a buying event and an annual gathering. Major retail buyers attend to place orders for the autumn and winter selling seasons. New product launches, particularly in branded fashion jewellery and in lab-grown diamond, are timed to coincide with the show. Industry trade bodies hold annual meetings during the week, and the principal trade press coverage including JCK Online, National Jeweler and Rapaport is concentrated around the event.

Adjacent Shows

The week traditionally hosts several adjacent and competing events. The Couture show, an invitation-only gathering of higher-end designer jewellers, runs at a separate Las Vegas property. The AGTA GemFair Las Vegas covers coloured stones and is operated by the American Gem Trade Association. The Smith and Smith fine watch and jewellery presentations and several smaller events occupy the same week. Together these events make the late-May Las Vegas week the most concentrated annual gathering of the global jewellery industry outside Hong Kong.

Legacy and Position

JCK Las Vegas has become integral to the structure of the American jewellery industry, with annual buying patterns, new-product launches and trade-press cycles all aligned to the show calendar. Its scale, scheduling and central position in the year give the event a level of authority within the American trade comparable to that of Baselworld in its prime within the European watch industry, although the comparison is no longer exact since Baselworld's collapse in 2020.
