Jude Frances is an American fine jewellery brand founded in 2002 by the husband-and-wife designers Jude and Frances Gambini and based in Newport Beach, California. The house is best known for its convertible earring system, in which a single pair of huggie or stud bases is paired with a wide range of detachable charm extensions, allowing the same earrings to be worn in multiple lengths, gem combinations and styles.

Founders and design philosophy

Jude Gambini, the design lead, trained in fine jewellery and operated as an independent designer in southern California before founding the house with her husband Frances Gambini, who handles the business side. The convertible earring system, which the firm marketed under the name Jude Frances Provence and later as the Lisse and Sonoma collections, was developed in response to the practical observation that many clients owned a single pair of diamond stud or hoop earrings that they wore daily, and would welcome a way to switch between casual and formal looks without changing the base ear setting.

Product mix

The core inventory is in 18-carat yellow, white and rose gold, with diamond pavé and a wide range of coloured stone charms in turquoise, lapis lazuli, mother-of-pearl, tourmaline, amethyst and other materials. The signature huggie earring is a small hoop pavé-set with diamonds and fitted with a hidden post mechanism that accepts the brand's range of charm drops. Bracelets, necklaces, rings and chokers in matching styles complete the line.

Distribution

Jude Frances is sold through a network of independent retailers in the United States and through department stores including Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. The brand has been the subject of profiles in JCK, National Jeweler and InStore Magazine, and has won multiple Couture Design Awards at the annual Couture Show in Las Vegas, the principal North American fine-jewellery trade event. Jude Frances has been a regular exhibitor at Couture since its founding.

Trade significance

The interest of the brand to the trade lies in its design system rather than in any single piece. The convertible earring concept, in which the consumer is sold an interchangeable platform rather than a sequence of unrelated pairs, has been widely imitated in mid-market American fine jewellery. Jude Frances has been one of the most consistent commercial expressions of that idea over the last two decades and is regularly cited in trade discussion of the convertible category. The house is independent and family-owned, which is increasingly unusual at this scale of the American fine-jewellery market.
