Just Gold

Just Gold

Hong Kong retail jewellery chain

Famous jewellers & jewellery housesView in dictionary · 360 words

Just Gold is a Hong Kong-based retail jewellery chain founded in 1984 that grew during the 1990s and 2000s into one of the recognisable mid-market gold jewellery brands serving the Chinese and overseas Chinese market. The chain is one of several Hong Kong houses, alongside Chow Tai Fook, Chow Sang Sang, Luk Fook and Tse Sui Luen, that defined the post-war pattern of mainland-Chinese-facing retail gold jewellery.

Position in the Hong Kong gold trade

The Hong Kong retail gold trade is dominated by a small group of large family-controlled chains, almost all of which trade in 999.9 fine gold and Chuk Kam, a Cantonese term for nominally 24-carat or 999 fine gold used in jewellery. Just Gold has historically positioned itself as a design-driven entrant in this market, with a focus on lighter, more contemporary 18-carat and 24-carat designs aimed at younger Hong Kong and mainland Chinese consumers, in contrast to the heavier traditional bridal sets that dominate at Chow Tai Fook and Luk Fook.

Product mix

The chain's inventory covers the standard Hong Kong retail spectrum: 999.9 fine gold bridal sets, Chuk Kam bangles and chains, 18-carat diamond jewellery, jadeite cabochon rings and pendants, and Chinese zodiac and cultural-motif gold pieces. Jadeite is a particular emphasis given the cultural importance of fine Burmese jadeite in the Hong Kong market, and the chain has developed long-running relationships with jadeite buyers in Mandalay and Yangon.

Mainland China expansion

Like its larger competitors, Just Gold expanded aggressively into mainland China through the 2000s and 2010s, opening stores in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. The mainland strategy followed the broader Hong Kong-brand template of using Hong Kong-trained staff and Hong Kong-sourced inventory to support a premium-to-local positioning relative to mainland Chinese chains.

Trade significance

Just Gold is significant within the Greater China retail trade as a smaller but design-led participant in the family-controlled Hong Kong gold sector. The chain illustrates the segmentation of that sector into traditional bridal-led houses and design-led houses, a segmentation that has shaped product development in the wider Asian gold-jewellery trade.
