Kagem emerald
Emerald from the Kagem mine, Zambia
Kagem emerald is the trade designation for emerald produced specifically at the Kagem mine in the Kafubu area of Zambia, the world's largest emerald operation. Kagem material accounts for the bulk of Zambian emerald supply and forms the volume reference for Zambian emerald in the international trade.
Position within Kafubu material
Kagem emeralds are part of the wider Kafubu deposit and share the geological and gemmological characteristics of the surrounding district: a slightly bluish-green colour from chromium and iron in chromium-bearing schists, biotite, magnetite and tremolite-actinolite inclusions, and good clarity relative to most other emerald sources. Kagem-specific provenance is established through Gemfields' chain-of-custody documentation, the auction lots in which the material is sold, and laboratory inclusion analysis where laboratory work is commissioned.
Quality range and grading
Kagem production covers the full quality range. Fine top-grade Kagem stones in larger sizes can show medium-dark tone with a strong vivid green colour and acceptable clarity, suitable for high-end jewellery commissions. Mid-grade Kagem stones provide the mass-market jewellery trade with consistent commercial-grade material at predictable prices. Lower-grade Kagem material is cut into calibrated melee and small accent stones for use in pavé and side-stone applications. Gemfields grades and parcels its production by quality before auction, which gives buyers a more structured choice than is typical at most coloured-stone source-points.
Treatment and disclosure
Kagem emeralds are typically clarity-enhanced with cedarwood oil or, increasingly, with synthetic resins, in line with international emerald practice. Reputable laboratories disclose treatment level on a four-step scale (none, minor, moderate, significant). Heat treatment is not generally applied. Origin determination through laboratory inclusion analysis is well established for Kagem material and supports confident origin disclosure to retail buyers.
Trade significance
For the international emerald trade, Kagem emerald is one of the most reliable supply origins for commercial-grade goods and a meaningful supplier of fine material. The auction system and the documented chain-of-custody from mine to market make Kagem emerald a relatively well-traceable origin within a generally less-traceable coloured-stone landscape, and the firm's responsible-sourcing disclosures provide a paper trail that few other emerald sources can match.
