Kashmir ruby

Kashmir ruby

A trade designation that should not be confused with Kashmir sapphire

Gem varietiesView in dictionary · 340 words

The term Kashmir ruby is encountered occasionally in trade contexts and is generally a misnomer. The Sumjam deposit in Indian-administered Kashmir, source of the celebrated Kashmir sapphire, has not produced commercially significant quantities of ruby. Where the term "Kashmir ruby" appears it usually refers either to ruby from the broader Pakistani Kashmir region (more correctly identified as Hunza ruby or by specific Karakoram locality), to ruby from elsewhere in the Indian subcontinent that has acquired the "Kashmir" label imprecisely, or to material whose true origin is uncertain and the seller has applied a marketable name without supporting attribution.

Pakistani-administered Kashmir ruby

Ruby from the Pakistani-administered Karakoram region, principally from Hunza-area marble-hosted deposits, has been worked since the 1970s and produces saturated pinkish-red ruby of variable quality. The proper trade descriptor is "Hunza ruby" or "Pakistan ruby" rather than "Kashmir ruby", since the latter risks confusion with the Sumjam Kashmir sapphire premium.

Other Kashmir-area ruby occurrences

Minor occurrences of ruby in the broader Indian-administered Kashmir region exist but have not produced commercial volumes of facet-grade material. Where Indian sources are documented for fine ruby the relevant localities are typically in the southern shield (Karnataka, Mysore region) rather than in Kashmir. The use of "Kashmir ruby" without specific supporting locality data should be treated with scepticism.

Trade considerations

For the working trade the practical position is that any stone offered as "Kashmir ruby" should be backed by a current laboratory report identifying both species (ruby) and country of origin. Country-level origin determination for ruby is established by major laboratories using trace-element and inclusion analysis; sub-locality calls within Pakistan or India are generally not made on the same reports. Buyers paying any premium attached to a Kashmir name should ensure the documentation is specific and current.
