Kirk Kara
American bridal jewellery house, founded 1985
Kirk Kara is an American bridal jewellery brand established in Los Angeles in 1985 by Kara Kassabian, a fourth-generation Armenian goldsmith whose family workshop traces back to nineteenth-century Constantinople. The firm is best known for hand-engraved diamond engagement rings worked in the manner of late Edwardian and early Art Deco mountings, and for a recurring use of milgrain detailing executed at the bench rather than by mass-replication.
Origins and house lineage
The Kassabian family, like several other Armenian jewellery dynasties dispersed by the events of 1915, re-established itself in the diaspora trade through Beirut and ultimately Los Angeles. Kara Kassabian trained under his father and grandfather before opening Kirk Kara in 1985 as a wholesale design house supplying independent retailers. The firm has remained family-run, with Kara's son Jordan Kassabian taking on principal design and operational responsibility in the 2010s. Production has remained centred in Los Angeles, with the bench employing techniques and tooling that the family has carried through several generations.
House style
The Kirk Kara aesthetic sits within the broader category of vintage-revival bridal, but is distinguished from competitors by a deliberate adherence to hand-engraving, hand-applied milgrain, and through-pierced gallery work. Diamond melee is typically set bead-style or bezel-style with hand-finished raised settings, and the company has built a recognisable visual signature around fine surface ornament that shows under loupe inspection. Centre stones are generally rounds, ovals, cushions and emerald cuts, almost always offered in 18-carat white, yellow or rose gold, with platinum available on commission. The collections are issued under names such as Pirouetta, Stella, Charlotte and Dahlia rather than catalogue numbers, and many designs accommodate either a single solitaire centre or a halo configuration on the same shank.
Distribution and diamond sourcing
Kirk Kara distributes through a network of independent jewellers across the United States and Canada and has historically declined direct-to-consumer retail, though it maintains a brand website that channels enquiries to authorised retailers. Centre diamonds are not normally supplied by Kirk Kara itself; the mountings are sold semi-mount or as completed pieces using GIA-graded stones provided by the retail partner or, for higher-value commissions, sourced through the brand's own diamond contacts. The firm has signed the Kimberley Process and Patriot Act compliance attestations standard across the United States bridal trade and is a member of Jewelers of America and the American Gem Society.
Trade position
Within the American bridal landscape Kirk Kara occupies the same broad tier as Tacori, Ritani and Verragio, that is, designer-led semi-mount houses positioned between the mass-market and the haute joaillerie maisons. Its competitive distinction is the explicit emphasis on craft detail rather than novel form. For an estate or resale assessment, Kirk Kara mountings are stamped K.K. with the metal mark and the design code, and pieces with intact surface engraving and milgrain retain value better than worn examples in which the hand finishing has been polished out by retail bench work.
