A descriptive sub-category within the freshwater pearl group
The term 'lake-water pearl' is a descriptive sub-category within the broader category of freshwater pearls, used in some trade and gemmological literature to distinguish pearls cultured (or, more rarely, formed naturally) in lakes from those produced in rivers and reservoirs. The term has no special legal or laboratory status in the modern pearl trade, which uses 'freshwater pearl' as the principal designation under the CIBJO Pearl Book and the FTC Guides, but the lake-water sub-category remains useful for historical and contextual description, particularly in connection with the Japanese Lake Biwa industry and the early Chinese freshwater operations on the lakes of the lower Yangtze region.
The freshwater context
Freshwater pearls are produced by mussels of several species, principally Hyriopsis cumingii (the triangle shell mussel of China), Hyriopsis schlegelii (the Lake Biwa mussel of Japan), Margaritifera margaritifera (the European freshwater pearl mussel, almost entirely now of conservation rather than commercial significance), and various North American Mississippi-basin species (formerly important for shell-bead manufacture but not for pearl culture). Freshwater pearls are produced in lakes, rivers, ponds, reservoirs and aquaculture-built water bodies. The water type matters less than is sometimes implied: the species of mussel, the water chemistry, the temperature regime and the management practices have far greater influence on the outcome than whether the body of water is a lake or a river per se.
Lake-water versus river-water characteristics
Where the distinction is drawn in the older literature, lake-water pearls are described as having more time to grow at relatively stable water temperatures, with somewhat more uniform nacre deposition, and as tending toward lustrous body colours with strong orient. River-water pearls, in this older literature, were sometimes described as more variable, with stronger seasonal banding in the nacre. The distinction is descriptive rather than diagnostic, and modern laboratory analysis does not differentiate freshwater pearls from one another by water-body type. The CIBJO Pearl Book and the FTC Guides recognise 'cultured freshwater pearl' as the appropriate trade descriptor, with origin (Japan, China and so on) as an additional disclosure where it can be supported.
The Lake Biwa case
The most important historical lake-water pearl industry was that of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, which produced tissue-nucleated cultured freshwater pearls from approximately 1935 to the early 1980s, when industrial pollution and disease ended commercial operations. The Lake Biwa pearls, marketed under the 'Biwa' designation, were the technical and aesthetic benchmark for freshwater cultured pearls through much of the twentieth century, and the term 'Biwa' was used loosely in the international trade as a generic descriptor for any tissue-nucleated freshwater pearl. Subsequent regulatory tightening has restricted the term to pearls actually cultivated in Lake Biwa, and most modern 'Biwa-style' material is correctly labelled as Chinese freshwater.
Modern Chinese production
The vast majority of contemporary freshwater pearls are produced in lakes and reservoirs of central and southern China, principally in the Hunan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, Jiangxi and Zhejiang provinces. The largest body of water historically central to Chinese freshwater pearl production is Lake Tai, on the border of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, although environmental restrictions have shifted production to less heavily-fished lakes and reservoirs over the past two decades. Modern Chinese production produces both tissue-nucleated and bead-nucleated freshwater cultured pearls, with the latter (Edison and CFW bead-nucleated) closing much of the historical gap between freshwater and South Sea/Akoya pearls.
Practical use of the term
For the modern jewellery historian and trade buyer, 'lake-water pearl' is best treated as descriptive shorthand referring to a freshwater cultured pearl produced in a lake, with the recognition that the term carries no certifying weight beyond what the broader 'freshwater cultured pearl' designation provides. A pearl described as 'lake-water' in modern trade literature is, in practical terms, a freshwater cultured pearl whose cultivation locale is described in greater geographic specificity than is required by trade regulation.
