Colour & clarity gradingView in dictionary · 220 words

A Lotus report is the standard grading document issued by Lotus Gemology in Bangkok, presenting the laboratory's findings on a stone's identification, origin, treatment, weight, dimensions, clarity, and colour grade. For ruby, sapphire and spinel, the Lotus report is one of the most cited credentials in the contemporary coloured-stone trade, alongside reports from Gübelin, SSEF and AGL.

Structure of the report

The standard full report identifies the species and variety, gives the weight, shape and dimensions, determines origin where the evidence supports a confident call, discloses heat treatment using the H/H(a)/H(b)/H(c) framework, and provides a colour grade where the stone qualifies for one of the laboratory's published categories such as pigeon blood (PB1, PB2, PB3) or royal blue (RB1, RB2, RB3). The report carries a unique identifier, a photograph, and the signatures of the examining gemmologists.

Acceptance

Lotus reports are accepted at the major auction houses and by specialist dealers as carrying real weight on the questions of origin and treatment. For the highest-end ruby and sapphire market, dealers and collectors increasingly seek multiple laboratory reports on a single stone, with Lotus, Gübelin and SSEF the three most commonly stacked on top-grade material.
