Magic size is the trade term for the carat-weight thresholds at which gemstone per-carat prices step up sharply due to the combination of supply-side rarity and consumer-demand psychology. The thresholds occur principally at whole-number weights (1.00, 2.00, 3.00, 5.00, 10.00 carats) and at half-carat increments. Where the breaks occur
The principal magic-size thresholds for diamonds are 0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00, 3.00, 4.00, 5.00, 7.00, and 10.00 carats. The price-per-carat step-up at each threshold varies depending on the colour, clarity, and cut tier of the stone, with the largest absolute and relative step-ups typically at 1.00, 5.00, and 10.00 carats. For coloured stones, the breaks are broadly comparable but less precisely codified, with the variation between species (ruby, sapphire, emerald) and within colour and clarity tiers producing more variable price discontinuities than in the diamond market.

Cutting decisions at the threshold
The magic-size phenomenon affects cutting decisions throughout the trade. A cutter working a piece of rough that could yield either a 0.99 or a 1.00 carat finished stone faces a clear economic choice: cut for optimum proportions and accept whatever finished weight results, or cut to retain weight above the magic threshold. In many cases the economically rational decision is to retain the weight above the threshold even at the cost of slightly less than ideal proportions, because the price premium for crossing the threshold can outweigh the discount for slightly suboptimal cut.
Buyer awareness
For buyers, the magic-size phenomenon creates opportunity and risk. Stones priced just above magic-size thresholds are paying a substantial premium for the round-number weight; stones just below the thresholds offer better per-dollar value for buyers willing to forgo round-number certification. Both positions are economically rational depending on the buyer's intended use and time horizon.
