Mahenge Pink Spinel — Unheated, GIA-Certified
- Key concepts
- mahenge spinel, pink spinel, tanzania spinel, hot pink spinel, unheated spinel
Mahenge — a gemstone-producing region in Tanzania — produced the spinel discovery of the 21st century in 2007: a rough deposit of saturated hot-pink to neon-red spinel that revolutionised the spinel market overnight. Mahenge spinel is structurally untreated (heat treatment is not commercially practiced on red/pink spinel), Mohs 8 in hardness, and durable for daily wear. Skyjems' Mahenge inventory is currently a thin rotating category — please enquire with the curator for current selection.
Why Mahenge spinel matters
The 2007 Mahenge find produced material with saturation and fluorescence that exceeded what most collectors thought possible in spinel. The neon hot-pink character is the signature; some stones cross into red and overlap with Mogok red spinel pricing tiers. The deposit is much smaller than Burmese spinel sources, which keeps Mahenge tightly supplied.
Five-step evaluation
(1) GIA report confirms variety = spinel, origin = Tanzania (Mahenge where supported), treatment = none; (2) colour reads vivid hot pink to neon-red with strong saturation; (3) clarity is eye-clean to lightly included; (4) cut returns light through the centre — Mahenge rewards a precise cut; (5) carat weight matches the lab.
