Mark XV

Mark XV

Later-generation gemmological microscope in the American Mark series

Tools & instrumentsView in dictionary · 201 words

The Mark XV is a later-generation member of the long-running American Mark series of gemmological microscopes, succeeding earlier numbered models including the Mark VII and Mark X. The series is purpose-built for gemstone inspection rather than general microscopy and is characterised by a stereo-zoom binocular head paired with a substage configured for darkfield illumination through an iris diaphragm.

Specification on the Mark XV typically includes a stereo-zoom magnification range in the order of 10x to 60x, with some accessory eyepieces and lens combinations extending it. The substage offers darkfield, brightfield, and oblique illumination by means of an iris and a movable swing-arm reflector. Overhead reflected lighting is provided either by a goose-neck fibre-optic head or by an integrated overhead lamp, and an articulating gem holder allows the specimen to be rotated and tilted for inclusion study.

The Mark XV is, in practical terms, a refinement rather than a re-design: the optical principles are unchanged from earlier instruments, and the value of the later units lies in improvements to mechanical stability, illumination uniformity, and accessory ergonomics. As with all instruments in the family, the precise specification of any individual unit should be verified against original manufacturer documentation.
