Montepuez — The Mozambique Ruby District
From a 2009 discovery to the world's largest ruby producer in under a decade
Montepuez is a ruby-mining district in Cabo Delgado Province, northern Mozambique, that since 2009 has reshaped the global ruby supply chain. The deposit, hosted in amphibolites of the Mozambique Belt, was first prospected by artisanal miners and then formalised under the Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) joint venture, in which Gemfields holds the majority stake. By the mid-2010s Montepuez was producing more rough ruby by weight than any other source in the world, and by the late 2010s it had displaced traditional sources in many segments of the market.
Geology and discovery
The Montepuez deposit lies in a Pan-African amphibolite-gneiss terrain in which corundum crystallised under amphibolite-facies metamorphic conditions. Two principal mineralisation styles occur: primary rubies hosted directly in amphibolite, and secondary rubies in eluvial and alluvial gravels derived from weathered amphibolite. The secondary deposits are particularly important commercially because they yield clean, gem-quality material in commercial sizes with relatively low extraction cost. The discovery of the deposit followed reports of artisanal ruby finds in 2009, with formal exploration and mining beginning shortly after.
Operations and the Gemfields auction model
Montepuez Ruby Mining operates a large-scale mechanised concession alongside continuing artisanal activity in surrounding areas. Gemfields markets the production through a series of high-profile rough auctions held at intervals through the year in Singapore, Bangkok, and Jaipur. The auction model — sealed bids on graded parcels, no negotiation, public reporting of results — has set a transparent reference price for Mozambique ruby and has accelerated the material's adoption in the global trade.
Quality and treatment
Montepuez rubies range from purplish-red and orangey-red to a vivid pure red that competes credibly with Burmese material in fine-quality goods. The bulk of commercial production is heat-treated to improve clarity and saturate colour; a small fraction of the production reaches the market unheated and commands meaningful premiums when it does. Sizes range from melee through stones over ten carats, with the auction parcels graded by colour, clarity, and size.
In the trade
Montepuez has changed the conversation around ruby. Before 2010 the trade was largely supplied by Mong Hsu (Myanmar) heated material with a thin top layer of unheated Burmese and Vietnamese fine goods. Today, Montepuez supplies a substantial share of all heated and a growing share of unheated commercial ruby, and major laboratories routinely identify Mozambique origin on reports. Buyers should expect Montepuez to be disclosed by origin on any major laboratory document for stones above approximately one carat, and price comparisons against Burmese material should account for both origin and treatment status.
