Mozambique Ruby — Heated, Lab-Certified

Key concepts
mozambique ruby, heated ruby, montepuez ruby, african ruby, grs ruby

Mozambique entered the global ruby market in the early 2010s with the discovery of the Montepuez deposit, and it has since become one of the largest sources of fine ruby by volume. Heated Mozambique ruby — the standard commercial tier — delivers strong colour and clarity at a price point well below Burmese ruby of comparable quality. Skyjems carries Mozambique ruby with origin and treatment disclosed on the lab letter; current inventory in this exact slice is thin (4 SKUs heated Mozambique) and rotates frequently.

Why Mozambique ruby matters

Two reasons. (1) Supply — Montepuez is one of the few deposits producing ruby at industrial scale, which has stabilised the broader ruby market. (2) Quality — top Mozambique material approaches Burmese in colour saturation, particularly after heat treatment, while pricing 30–50% below comparable Burmese.

What heating does to Mozambique ruby

Standard heat treatment (without flux) dissolves silk inclusions, brightens body colour, and removes blue undertones that are common in Mozambique rough. The treatment is stable and disclosed on the lab letter as "indications of heating" or specific terminology depending on the lab. Heating without residue or flux is the cleanest commercial enhancement and is industry-accepted.

Origin determination

Mozambique origin is determined by trace-element fingerprints (high iron content, characteristic chromium ratios) and inclusion patterns. GIA, GRS, Lotus, and SSEF all issue Mozambique origin reports with high confidence. The Montepuez deposit is the most-cited specific origin on lab letters.

Five-step evaluation

(1) Lab confirms origin = Mozambique and treatment is disclosed (heated for this tier); (2) colour reads vivid red without strong purple undertone; (3) clarity is eye-clean — heating typically improves clarity in Mozambique material; (4) cut returns light through the centre; (5) carat weight matches the lab.
