Paris, Maine, is a town in Oxford County in the western highlands of the state, and the site of Mount Mica, where the first gem-quality tourmaline in the United States was recovered in 1820. The discovery, made by two schoolboys named Elijah Hamlin and Ezekiel Holmes, opened a new chapter in American gem mining and led to a long history of pegmatite-hosted tourmaline production from Maine that continues today. The Paris locality, alongside the related deposits at Mount Apatite in Auburn and the Dunton quarry in Newry, established Maine as the principal historic source of American gem tourmaline.

The 1820 discovery and early production

Hamlin and Holmes, walking on Mount Mica in October 1820, found loose green tourmaline crystals in the soil and traced them to a pegmatite outcrop. The find was reported to professional mineralogists and became the basis for sustained, if intermittent, mining over the following two centuries. Augustus Choate Hamlin (Elijah's nephew) wrote the first comprehensive treatment of Mount Mica tourmaline in his 1873 book on the locality, which remains a foundational document in American gem mining history.

Mount Mica produced significant quantities of green tourmaline, pink tourmaline, and bi-colour material throughout the nineteenth century, with peak production in the 1880s and 1890s. The mine has been worked by various operators since, with sporadic productive episodes through the twentieth and into the twenty-first centuries. The Coromoto Minerals operation, which began work at Mount Mica in 2003, has produced significant new pockets of fine tourmaline.

Geological setting

The Mount Mica pegmatite is one of many gem-bearing pegmatites in the Oxford County belt of western Maine. The pegmatites intrude older metamorphic country rocks and crystallised from late-stage residual melts rich in lithium, beryllium, and boron. Tourmaline crystallises in the inner pocket zones of the pegmatites, often in association with quartz, microcline, lepidolite, and various phosphates. The Maine pegmatite belt is geologically continuous with similar deposits in New Hampshire and southern Quebec.

Other notable Oxford County tourmaline localities include the Dunton quarry at Newry — source of the famous 1972 tourmaline find that produced the largest documented gem-tourmaline pocket recovery in North America — and the various Mount Apatite workings in Auburn. Paris itself remains a productive locality alongside these neighbours.

Material characteristics

Maine tourmalines are valued for their clarity, pastel hues, and clean colour zones. Watermelon tourmaline (pink core with green rim) and bi-colour material are signature products, alongside saturated pink rubellite, mint-green elbaite, and rare blue indicolite. Sizes range from small calibrated stones up to occasional examples above ten carats, with the very large Dunton-quarry stones being exceptional outliers.
