Pearl Surface Grade — Moderately Spotted

Pearl Surface Grade — Moderately Spotted

GIA's mid-band surface grade, where blemishes are obvious but not pervasive

Colour & clarity gradingView in dictionary · 333 words

Moderately Spotted is the third of the four surface-quality grades in GIA's pearl grading system, indicating a pearl whose blemishes — pits, bumps, or discolouration — are readily visible without magnification but do not yet dominate the appearance of the pearl. The grade sits between Lightly Spotted above and Heavily Spotted below, and is where most commercially produced pearls fall when sorted out of high-end strands.

What Moderately Spotted means

A Moderately Spotted pearl shows obvious surface defects on at least one face, sufficient that the eye registers them at normal viewing distance without instruction. Typical features include multiple small pits, a noticeable raised bump, an irregular nacre patch, or local discolouration. The defects are clearly present but the pearl can still be oriented in a setting so that better surfaces face the viewer, and the overall appearance can remain attractive at appropriate price points.

Strands made up of Moderately Spotted pearls are common in the mid-market, where price sensitivity outweighs the desire for perfection. South Sea and Tahitian pearls graded Moderately Spotted often retain dramatic colour, lustre, and size — qualities that can carry the pearl visually despite the surface character — and remain saleable at substantial absolute prices, particularly as single-pearl pendants or rings.

Pricing

Moderately Spotted pearls trade at 40 to 60 percent below Clean equivalents of the same size, shape, and lustre. The discount is the steepest single step in the surface-grade ladder, reflecting the visible drop-off in finish quality as defects move from loupe-only to plainly visible. For buyers willing to accept obvious surface character, Moderately Spotted material can offer fine size and colour at substantially reduced cost — a viable choice where the pearl will be set in a piece worn occasionally rather than studied closely.
