Pomellato Iconica

Pomellato Iconica

The Milanese house's chunky interlocking-link signature, reinterpreted as architectural gold

Famous jewellers & jewellery housesView in dictionary · 666 words

Iconica is the Pomellato collection built around chunky, interlocking gold links rendered in deliberately oversized, sculptural proportions. Launched as the house's modern reinterpretation of classic chain jewellery, the line includes rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings in rose, yellow, and white gold, with optional pavé-set diamond accents. Its architectural aesthetic and stackable construction have made Iconica a signature line for the Milan-based maison and one of the most recognisable Italian gold-link expressions of the present generation.

Design language

The Iconica vocabulary is drawn from the gourmette and curb chain, but enlarged, faceted, and finished to a level normally reserved for high jewellery. Each link is hollow-cast in 18-karat gold, individually polished, then assembled so that the connection points sit flush and the chain articulates without binding. The hollow construction allows visually substantial proportions while keeping wearable weight under control — a recurring concern in Italian goldsmithing that prizes scale without burden.

The diamond-set Iconica pieces apply pavé to the visible faces of selected links, leaving the remaining links polished. The contrast of brilliant pavé against satin or high-polish gold is central to the line's surface logic, and the proportions of the pavé fields are designed to read as ornament rather than as the dominant feature.

Origin within the house

Pomellato was founded in Milan in 1967 by Pio Visconti and built its identity on a contemporary, ready-to-wear approach to fine jewellery — coloured stones in pragmatic settings, chains designed for layering, and a refusal of the rigid hierarchies of traditional high jewellery. Iconica continues that programme. The collection's links are intended to be worn alone, stacked with other Iconica pieces, or layered with the house's coloured-stone collections such as Nudo and M'ama Non M'ama. The result is a system rather than a single object, in keeping with Pomellato's broader product philosophy.

Construction and finish

Iconica gold is 18-karat, in three tonalities: rose, yellow, and white. Surface options across the collection include high polish, satin, and partial pavé. The pavé-set stones are typically D–F colour, VS clarity, hand-set into milled seats by Pomellato's Milan workshop. Catches on the chain pieces are integrated into the link pattern so that the closure is visually continuous rather than appearing as a separate fastener.

Because of the hollow construction, Iconica pieces should not be subjected to the bench operations that solid chains tolerate — sizing by spreading or compressing a link will deform the wall. Servicing is most safely returned to a Pomellato workshop or to a goldsmith experienced with the marque.

In the trade

Iconica retails in the Pomellato boutique network and through authorised multi-brand retailers. Secondary-market interest in the collection has grown steadily since launch, and well-preserved pieces in rose gold, particularly bracelets in the heavier link sizes, have a settled following at auction and in the pre-owned market. As with any Pomellato chain, condition and originality of the catch and end-links are the first things experienced buyers examine. Hollow-link gold is more sensitive to handling than solid-link equivalents, and pieces showing dents or repaired links trade at a meaningful discount.

For a client building a Pomellato wardrobe, Iconica is the architectural foundation: a set of pieces that wear comfortably, layer with the coloured-stone collections, and read instantly as Pomellato to anyone familiar with the house.

Care

Routine cleaning is by mild soap and warm water with a soft brush, paying attention to the points where links meet. Ultrasonic cleaning is acceptable for non-pavé pieces but should be avoided for Iconica pavé items, where it can loosen small stones over time. Storage in individual pouches prevents the polished links from marking neighbouring pieces in a jewellery box.
