A potato pearl is a freshwater cultured pearl whose finished shape is near-round but visibly irregular, with surface lumps and slight asymmetry that resemble the silhouette of a small potato. The term is trade nomenclature rather than a formal grading category; it sits in the descriptive vocabulary alongside oval, off-round, button, drop, and baroque, and is most often applied to Chinese freshwater production where this morphology dominates the lower-mid commercial tiers.
Formation
Almost all potato pearls on the market are tissue-nucleated freshwater pearls grown in Hyriopsis cumingii or Hyriopsis schlegelii mussels in Chinese reservoirs and lakes, principally in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Hubei provinces. A small piece of mantle tissue from a donor mussel is implanted into the host's mantle, where the host secretes successive layers of nacre around the graft. Without a bead nucleus to impose a spherical template, the resulting pearl takes whatever shape the pocket and the host's secretion pattern dictate. When the pocket is roughly spherical and the host secretes evenly, the pearl ends up near-round with localised bumps — the potato shape.
Identification and grading
Potato pearls are distinguished from true rounds by visible deviation from sphericity and by the surface lumps that disqualify them from the round grade in trade systems such as those used by the China Pearl & Jewellery Association and reflected in GIA's Pearl Description System. Diameter is reported as a range (for example 7.0 to 7.5 mm) rather than a single figure. Lustre, surface, and nacre thickness are graded on the same scales used for round freshwater material; potato shape itself is a shape designation, not a quality demerit, although the irregularity caps the price ceiling.
Body colour in commercial potato production runs through white, cream, peach, lavender, and pink, with metallic and dyed treatments common in the lower tiers. Treatments — bleaching, dyeing, and irradiation for darker tones — must be disclosed under FTC and CIBJO guidelines.
In the trade
Potato pearls are the workhorse of the affordable freshwater strand market. They are drilled and strung as uniform-diameter necklaces and bracelets, sold in graduated lengths, and used widely in beaded jewellery and multi-strand designs. The price per strand is a small fraction of comparable round freshwater material, which makes the shape attractive for designers working at accessible price points and for bridesmaid sets, school-fundraiser packs, and mass-market chain retail.
The shape also reads well in organic, hand-crafted aesthetics where perfect roundness would feel sterile. Designers working in the contemporary studio-jeweller idiom often prefer potato or off-round freshwater specifically for the textural variety the lumps provide.
Care
Potato pearls share the care requirements of all nacreous pearls: avoid acids, perfumes, hairsprays, and household cleaners; wipe gently after wear; store flat and separately from harder gems; restring silk-knotted strands every two to three years of regular wear. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are not recommended.
