Compagnie Financière Richemont SA is a Swiss-headquartered luxury goods conglomerate, founded in 1988 by the South African businessman Johann Rupert as a spin-off of the international assets of the Rembrandt Group. Richemont owns the largest portfolio of jewellery and watch maisons in the luxury sector, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Buccellati, Piaget, IWC, Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lange & Söhne, and Panerai. The group is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange under the ticker CFR and is the second-largest luxury conglomerate in the world after LVMH.

The jewellery houses

Cartier remains the financial centre of the group and one of the largest single jewellery houses in the world by revenue. Van Cleef & Arpels operates as the group's higher-priced, more design-oriented sister house, with particular strength in the high jewellery and Mystery Set categories. Buccellati, acquired in 2019 from the Gangtai Group, brought the Italian engraved-textile metalwork tradition under Richemont control and complements the more diamond-led offer of the French maisons. Piaget contributes both jewellery and watchmaking, with significant gem-set timepiece production.

Watchmaking

The watchmaking maisons sit alongside the jewellery houses in the group's structure and account for a substantial share of total group revenue. Vacheron Constantin, Lange & Söhne, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Panerai cover most of the haute horlogerie price band, while Cartier and Piaget produce significant volumes of jewellery watches. The group also retains Roger Dubuis and Baume & Mercier in smaller positions.

Distribution and online

Richemont built and then partially divested the online luxury retailer Yoox Net-a-Porter, which is now operated as a stand-alone business in which Richemont retains a minority position alongside Farfetch and Symphony Global. The group operates Watchfinder & Co. as a direct-channel pre-owned watch business and continues to invest in direct-to-consumer e-commerce across its maisons.

Position in the market

For the coloured-stone trade, Richemont's significance is as the largest single buyer of fine ruby, emerald, and sapphire in the high jewellery tier, alongside LVMH-owned Bulgari and Tiffany. High jewellery commissions from Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels routinely move museum-grade material out of dealer inventories, and laboratory reports from Gübelin and SSEF accompany most stones reaching this level of the market. The group's annual revenue runs above €20 billion, with the jewellery maisons contributing the dominant share.
