Robert Mouawad, born in 1946, is the Lebanese-born jeweller and gemstone collector who, as third-generation principal of the Mouawad family business, transformed it from a Beirut-centred regional house into a globally distributed luxury group. He is also one of the most active private collectors of significant diamonds and coloured stones of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, having owned at various times the Mouawad Splendour, the Mouawad Dynasty, the Mouawad Mondera, the Star of America, and several other landmark stones. His combined activity as principal of a luxury house and as private gem collector is unusual at his scale and has shaped the contemporary identity of the Mouawad brand.

The family business

The Mouawad firm was founded in 1890 by Daoud Mouawad, Robert's grandfather, in Beirut. The business passed to Robert's father Fayez Mouawad, who expanded it in the post-war period, and to Robert himself in 1976. Under Robert Mouawad's leadership the firm developed into a vertically integrated business with mining and refining interests, manufacturing operations, and a retail network spanning the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. The firm's principal markets remained the Middle East, but high-jewellery and signature-stone clients were drawn from a global luxury client base.

The diamond collection

Robert Mouawad's private collection is documented across the gemological and auction literature and includes several of the largest and most significant diamonds in private hands. The Mouawad Splendour is a 101.84-carat pear-shaped D-flawless diamond. The Mouawad Dynasty is a 245.35-carat polished D-flawless internally flawless diamond, recorded by Guinness World Records as the largest D-IF round-cut diamond. The Mouawad Mondera is a 280-carat polished diamond. Other significant pieces in the collection have included the Star of America, the Mouawad Magic, and a number of historic coloured stones acquired at auction over four decades.

The collection is exhibited periodically at industry events and at the firm's flagship locations. Several of the stones have been the subject of GIA reports of historical interest in their own right, documenting the largest stones ever submitted for grading.

Manufacturing and retail expansion

Under Robert Mouawad's direction the firm built workshops in Beirut, Geneva, and Bangkok, and opened retail flagships in Riyadh, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Geneva, and several other markets. The Mouawad atelier became known for technically demanding high-jewellery commissions, including pieces incorporating the firm's signature stones, and for bespoke work for Middle Eastern royal and aristocratic clients. The Bangkok manufacturing operation supports the firm's coloured-gemstone work, drawing on the city's role as the principal coloured-stone trading and cutting hub.

Public profile

Robert Mouawad is consistently among the most publicly visible principals of a luxury jewellery house, with frequent appearances at industry events and significant philanthropic activity in Lebanon and across the Middle East. The Mouawad Private Museum in Beirut houses portions of the family's collection and rotating exhibitions drawn from the firm's archive.

In the trade

For dealers and collectors operating in the Middle Eastern and global high-jewellery markets, Mouawad is one of the firms whose retail and acquisition activity moves prices for significant stones. The firm is an active participant at major auctions and a documented consignor at several of the most consequential private sales of the past three decades. The combination of operating jewellery house and active private collector is rare and gives Mouawad a particular position in the market for landmark stones.
