Royal jewellery encompasses two related but legally distinct categories: state regalia held in trust by a reigning house for ceremonial use, and personal jewellery owned privately by members of royal families and inherited or dispersed by ordinary inheritance and sale. The first category — crown jewels, sceptres, orbs, ceremonial necklaces — is typically inalienable, conserved by state institutions, and used in coronations, openings of parliament, and analogous events. The second category — engagement rings, parures, brooches, tiaras worn at private weddings and state visits — moves through families, between branches of dynasties, and onto the auction market, with provenance histories that constitute a discipline of their own.

State regalia and inalienability

The crown jewels of the United Kingdom, administered by the Royal Collection Trust and displayed at the Tower of London, are the canonical example of state regalia held in trust for the nation. The British regalia includes the Imperial State Crown, St Edward's Crown, the Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross, the Sovereign's Orb, and a substantial body of consort jewellery and ceremonial swords, with named stones including Cullinan I and II, the Black Prince's Ruby (in fact a spinel), the Stuart Sapphire, and St Edward's Sapphire. The Iranian National Treasury, held by the Central Bank of Iran in Tehran, contains an even larger holding by gem volume, including the Daria-i-Noor pink diamond, the Sea of Light, the Peacock Throne, and ceremonial parures from the Qajar and Pahlavi periods.

The Spanish, Dutch, Belgian, Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish royal houses maintain regalia of varying scale, typically displayed in palace museums or worn for major state occasions. Continental European holdings dispersed during the twentieth century — the Russian, Bavarian, Saxon, and Austrian crown jewels — are held by state museums in their successor states, with the Diamond Fund of the Russian Federation in the Kremlin Armoury and the Wittelsbacher in the Munich Residenz being the principal examples. The Indian princely state regalia, dispersed at independence, is partly held in museum collections (the Hyderabad Nizam's jewels, for example, in the National Museum, New Delhi) and partly in private hands.

Personal royal jewellery

Personal royal jewellery, by contrast, is owned in the conventional sense, inherited under wills and family settlements, and sometimes sold or auctioned. The collections of Queen Mary of the United Kingdom, the Duchess of Windsor, Marie Antoinette of France, the Empress Eugénie, the Maharanis of Indore and Baroda, and the Iranian Empress Farah Pahlavi are among the most studied. Auction sales of royal personal jewellery — the 1987 Geneva sale of the Duchess of Windsor's collection, the 2018 Sotheby's sale of Marie Antoinette's pearls and diamonds from the Bourbon-Parma collection — produce documented records of stones with verifiable royal provenance and establish reference prices for the provenance premium that royal ownership commands.

Within reigning families, the line between state and personal property is sometimes complicated. The Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara worn by the Princess of Wales is privately owned by the British royal family but used in publicly visible roles; the diamond and sapphire engagement ring worn first by Diana, Princess of Wales, and now by the Princess of Wales, is similarly personal property with significant public association. The trade and the auction houses are careful to distinguish private property, family-trust property, and state-held property when researching provenance.

Court jewellers and design influence

Royal commissions have historically driven the most ambitious jewellery design and the development of cutting and setting technique. Garrard, Asprey, and Wartski for the British court; Chaumet, Mellerio, and Boucheron for the French; Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels for the international royal trade of the early twentieth century; Bolin for the Russian imperial court; and Fabergé for Russian imperial commissions across the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are among the houses whose royal warrants and royal commissions shaped the technical and aesthetic standards of high jewellery.

The transmission of royal taste to the broader market is a documented process. The 1947 wedding of the future Queen Elizabeth II generated demand for sapphire and diamond bridal jewellery; the 1981 wedding of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer produced an enduring association between blue sapphire cluster engagement rings and bridal style; the 2011 and 2018 royal weddings sustained that association into a new generation. Court jewellers and the houses that supply royal commissions trade on the cultural prestige these events create, and the design language of royal pieces is studied and adapted by retail jewellers worldwide.

Dispersed royal collections

The major royal dispersals of the twentieth century — the Russian Imperial collection sold by the Soviet authorities in the late 1920s and early 1930s; the German princely collections sold or partially confiscated after 1918 and again after 1945; the Indian princely collections after independence in 1947; the Iranian non-state collection after 1979 — produced waves of fine historic stones entering the trade. Pieces with documented provenance from these dispersals carry significant premiums and are studied through archival photographs, family records, court jeweller archives, and the auction-house catalogues that document their reappearance.

For the trade, the verification of royal provenance is a research discipline. The relevant references include the Royal Collection Trust catalogues, the Hermitage and Diamond Fund archives, the published catalogues of the major court jewellers, the Christie's and Sotheby's specialist catalogue archives going back to the nineteenth century, and the academic literature on court history. The Hugh Roberts and Caroline de Guitaut volumes for the British collection, the Géza von Habsburg and Marina Lopato volumes for the Russian, and the Vincent Meylan and Hans Nadelhoffer volumes for the French and the Cartier archives respectively are among the principal scholarly references.

In the trade

Royal provenance is one of the strongest single drivers of premium pricing in the high-jewellery auction market. Verifiable royal ownership — supported by documented inventory, photographic record, court jeweller archive, or unbroken family descent — can multiply the underlying gem value by factors of two, three, or more, particularly for pieces with named stones or pieces by canonical court jewellers. The discipline of provenance research means that unsupported claims of royal ownership are routinely discounted by sophisticated buyers, and the trade's standards of documentation have risen materially since the late twentieth century.
