Ruby is red corundum coloured by chromium, the variety that occupies the colour position at the top of the coloured-stone hierarchy and that has, for centuries, traded at higher per-carat prices than any other gemstone. With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, refractive indices in the 1.762 to 1.770 range, and the chromium-driven red fluorescence that gives fine ruby its characteristic interior glow, the species combines durability with optical character in a way no other coloured stone matches. Burmese stones from the Mogok Valley have set the historical benchmark, and the trade phrase pigeon blood denotes the pure red to slightly purplish-red colour that the finest examples show under both daylight and incandescent illumination.

Composition and colour cause

Ruby is corundum, Al2O3, with chromium substituting for aluminium at trace concentrations to produce the red colour. The same species in the absence of chromium, or with iron and titanium combinations, gives sapphire in its various colours; the species boundary between ruby and pink sapphire is therefore a question of saturation and hue rather than mineralogy. International laboratory practice draws the line at red colour of sufficient saturation; below that, the stone is pink sapphire.

Chromium absorption produces strong red fluorescence under ultraviolet light and a weaker but visible fluorescence under sunlight, which contributes to the perceived interior glow of fine ruby. Iron, when present, quenches this fluorescence; Burmese stones are typically iron-poor and fluorescent, while Thai and some African stones contain more iron and show subdued fluorescence. The fluorescence question is one of the most reliable origin indicators available without instrumental analysis.

Sources and origin

Burma (Myanmar) has been the historical heart of ruby production, with the Mogok Valley supplying the highest tier of stones for at least five centuries. Mogok rubies are characteristically marble-hosted, with the silky inclusions and the chromium-driven red fluorescence that the trade associates with pigeon-blood colour. Mong Hsu, in northeastern Myanmar, became a significant source from the 1990s onward; Mong Hsu material is typically heat-treated to remove blue colour zoning and tends to be smaller than Mogok stones.

Mozambique emerged as a major ruby source from approximately 2009 with the discovery and development of the Montepuez deposit. Mozambican rubies span a wide quality range, with the finest stones showing colour and brilliance approaching Burmese benchmarks. The deposit is now operated at commercial scale by Gemfields and partners, providing significant supply to the international market. Other sources include Madagascar (Andilamena and Vatomandry), Thailand (historically Chanthaburi), Tanzania (Winza and Songea), Vietnam, and Tajikistan.

Origin determination by major laboratories — Gübelin, SSEF, GIA, AGL, Lotus Gemology — is decisive in the value of fine rubies. A laboratory opinion of Burmese origin (Mogok-type) commands substantial premiums over Mozambican or other origins of comparable colour and clarity. The premium reflects both the finite historical production from Mogok and market preference, rather than any inherent superiority of every Burmese stone.

Treatments

Heat treatment is the most common ruby treatment and is generally accepted in the trade when properly disclosed. Heating, typically in the 1,400 to 1,800 degrees Celsius range, can improve colour by dissolving silk inclusions and homogenising colour distribution. The treatment is permanent and stable, and AGTA classifies heated ruby as enhanced category "heat".

More aggressive treatments require careful disclosure. Lead-glass filling — the impregnation of fractures with high-refractive-index glass to mask cracks — is a stability concern: filled stones can be damaged by ordinary jewellery repair operations such as jeweller's torch heat, ultrasonic cleaning, and acidic pickling. Beryllium-diffusion treatment, common in sapphire, is less standard in ruby but is encountered occasionally. Both treatments must be disclosed and substantially affect value.

Unheated ruby of fine colour and clarity commands a meaningful premium over heated material of equivalent appearance, with the premium widening at the top of the quality scale. For investment-grade stones, an unheated laboratory determination from a reputable origin is a primary value driver alongside colour, clarity, and size.

Value drivers

Colour is the dominant value driver in ruby. Fine pigeon-blood colour, with the red holding both in daylight and incandescent illumination, commands the top tier. Saturation, tone, and hue all matter, with the most desirable stones combining high saturation, medium tone, and pure red to slightly purplish-red hue. Stones that read brownish or orangeish in tone, or that are pinkish rather than fully red, fall in lower value tiers.

Clarity considerations differ from diamond grading. Ruby is an included gem, and laboratory clarity grades use a different vocabulary; the trade evaluates clarity by visible eye-level inclusions and by light return through the stone. Eye-clean rubies at meaningful sizes are uncommon, and the trade tolerates more inclusion than it would in a diamond, provided the colour and brilliance are not impaired.

Size matters disproportionately at the top of the market: a five-carat fine Burmese ruby might trade at multiples of a one-carat stone of equivalent quality, with prices accelerating sharply as size increases. Cutting quality, while important, is typically secondary to colour and clarity in ruby valuation, and the trade accepts asymmetric or otherwise compromised cuts on stones whose rough preserves the most desirable colour.

In the trade

Ruby occupies a position alongside diamond, sapphire, and emerald as one of the four traditional precious stones. For dealers, fine Burmese ruby with a leading laboratory origin report is among the most concentrated stores of value in the coloured-stone market, with auction records routinely setting per-carat benchmarks well above $1,000,000 for top stones. The Sunrise Ruby (25.59 carats, Burmese, unheated) sold at Sotheby's Geneva in 2015 for over $30 million.

For the buyer assembling a fine ruby, the standard advice applies: prioritise colour, then origin and treatment status from a reputable laboratory, then size, with clarity considered in the context of the species rather than against diamond standards. The brand or atelier setting the stone matters less than the stone itself, but high-quality setting and design protect both the stone and its long-term value.
