Most sapphire on the world market has been heated. It is the oldest and most widely accepted treatment in the trade, it is stable and permanent, and a heated stone is not a lesser stone — it is a different proposition at a different price. What matters is that you are told which one you are looking at.
Tanzania produces sapphire across an unusually wide colour range, and a good part of what reaches the market from there has been heated to improve colour or clarity.
What heat does, and does not, do
Heat mobilises the silk — the fine rutile needles inside corundum — dissolving it and letting colour distribute more evenly. It can lift a sleepy blue, clear a milky stone, or push a pale pink toward something more definite. It cannot invent a colour that was never latent in the material.
The change is permanent. A heated sapphire will not fade or revert, and it needs no special care beyond what any sapphire needs.
Why a heated stone is worth considering
Because the alternative is often nothing at all. Unheated stones of comparable colour command a substantial premium and, in some colours and sizes, barely exist. A heated Tanzanian sapphire in a clean pink or a good blue is a real gem that leaves room in the budget for the setting. We sell both, and we say which is which.
Reading the lab report
A report records treatment — typically as an indication of heating — alongside species, variety and weight. GIA is the laboratory we lead with, and where a stone carries a GIA report we list its number on the product page. Some stones carry reports from other independent laboratories widely used across the trade; the wider selection is assessed in-house.
What to look at
(1) colour, judged as you see it rather than by what it might have been; (2) clarity after treatment; (3) cut; (4) that the treatment is disclosed on the listing; (5) price, understood against unheated material of the same colour.
