Unheated Kashmir Sapphire — Lab-Certified

Key concepts
kashmir sapphire, velvet blue sapphire, paddar valley, gubelin kashmir, ssef kashmir

Kashmir sapphire is the historical apex of the variety. The Paddar Valley deposits, discovered in 1881 in the Zanskar range of the Indian Himalayas, produced sapphires for roughly four decades before commercial output essentially ceased. Modern supply is almost entirely secondary-market — estate pieces, recut older stones, and rare new finds from artisanal work. Skyjems does not currently hold Kashmir sapphire in primary inventory. This entry is provided for buyers researching the category; sourcing through the curator's network is possible for documented requests.

Why Kashmir holds the apex

The Paddar deposits produced sapphires with a distinctive velvety-blue character — a slight grey/silky undertone that scatters light and produces a soft, lit-from-within glow. The deposit's chemistry (low iron, characteristic trace-element fingerprint) is unique and reliably distinguishable on lab letters. Combined with the supply scarcity that has held since the 1920s, Kashmir trades at the highest sapphire pricing tier worldwide.

What modern Kashmir buyers face

(1) Almost all available Kashmir is from the secondary market — estate jewellery, lab-cert verifications of older pieces, occasional new artisanal-mined stones. (2) Authentication is critical — vendor claims of "Kashmir" without modern lab letters from GIA, Lotus, SSEF, or Gübelin should be discounted entirely. (3) Pricing reflects extreme scarcity; budget expectations of $30,000–$200,000+ per carat at top quality are common.

Skyjems sourcing approach

Skyjems can source Kashmir sapphire on documented request through the dealer network in Geneva, London, Bangkok, and Hong Kong. The process requires: target spec (size, colour, treatment status, certification preference), budget envelope, and timeline. Lead times are typically 8–16 weeks, sometimes longer for very specific requirements.
