Be wary of pricing that seems too good, vague "certificates" from unnamed labs, and undisclosed treatment. When you acquire a coloured gemstone whose value rivals that of a fine motorcar, you are not merely acquiring a geological specimen. For stones of consequence, this means an independent laboratory report from an institution whose reputation is beyond reproach. The Gemological Institute of America remains the reference standard — not because it is the only qualified body, but because its grading reports carry the broadest recognition among serious collectors and family offices worldwide. A GIA report is not a guarantee of value, however. Origin determinations are expert opinions rendered by qualified gemologists examining microscopic inclusions, trace-element chemistry, and spectroscopic data. They are not geological certainties, and no reputable laboratory presents them as such. A curator who understands this distinction — and communicates it to you — is one who respects both the science and your intelligence.

One further point, which separates the careful from the careless: treatment disclosure is not optional. A stone described by origin alone — "Ceylon sapphire," "Burmese ruby" — without a statement of heat treatment status is an incomplete description. Unheated stones command a material premium over their heated counterparts, and the difference between "unheated" and "no disclosure" is the difference between transparency and omission. A dealer who leaves this detail unstated is not being economical with words; he is being economical with the truth.

If the image is too perfect, too airbrushed, too devoid of character, ask yourself: what else is being airbrushed away? The inclusions in a fine emerald are not imperfections to be hidden; they are the very features that tell you the stone grew in the earth rather than in a laboratory. The silk in a fine sapphire tells a trained eye something about its origin that no report can fully convey. A curator who is proud of his stones will show them without hesitation — inclusions and all.

4. The Fluency of Specialisation

Coloured gemstones are not diamonds. They do not conform to a single, standardised grading system. They are a language of their own — one of heat treatments and origin-specific saturations, of cutting styles that coax colour from rough, of inclusions that reveal geological history rather than diminish value.

Many fine jewellers treat coloured stones as a sideline, a secondary offering to their diamond business. They may know their way around a laboratory report, but they do not speak the language of coloured stones with native fluency. A curator who works in this world every day understands that a Burmese ruby is not merely red — it is a specific shade of red, with a specific fluorescence, a specific silk, a specific relationship between colour and light that cannot be reduced to a grading scale.
