Quartz is among the most abundant minerals on earth — about a tenth of the crust, second only to the feldspars — and Brazil produces more gem-quality material than anywhere. That abundance is exactly why it is interesting: when the rough costs little, the cutting can cost a lot, and quartz is where the most inventive lapidary work in the trade happens.
The varieties, and what separates them
Smoky quartz takes its brown-to-grey colour from natural irradiation in the ground. It runs from a pale champagne to a near-black, and the mid-tones cut beautifully.
Rose quartz is the soft pink, coloured by trace mineral inclusions — the same inclusions that give the best material a faint cloudiness rather than glassy transparency.
Rock crystal is colourless quartz, and is having a genuine moment: a large, flawless, well-cut colourless stone reads as architecture rather than as a diamond substitute.
Treatment
Quartz colours are variously natural or induced — irradiation and heat are both used across the species, and some pale material is enhanced. Ours is recorded as unheated stone by stone. Review each listing and its documentation for the individual gem.
Why size and cut carry this species
Quartz is 7 on the Mohs scale and arrives in large clean pieces, which frees a cutter to attempt concave facets, checkerboards and fantasy cuts that would be reckless in a costlier material. In a stone with no strong body colour to carry it, the cut is doing nearly all the work — so judge it first here, not last.
What to look at
(1) the cut, which in quartz is usually the point; (2) clarity, which should be clean in faceted material, allowing for rose quartz's natural haze; (3) colour evenness across the stone; (4) size, since scale is attainable; (5) treatment, asked per stone.
