Iolite - By Price: Lowest to Highest

Iolite is the name given to gem-quality specimens of the cordierite mineral, named after the ancient Greek word ios, for violet. Historically, the bluish purple gemstone has also been called “water sapphire” and “dichroite” (meaning two-coloured rock) because some specimens will have a sapphire blue colour when viewed from one direction, but be as clear as water when rotated to another angle. It can be used as an alternative to sapphire and tanzanite, though its use is still somewhat rare in jewellery-making. According to legend, Vikings used thin slices of iolite to help locate the sun on cloudy days as they navigated ancient shores.
