Frequently asked questions

Where can I get a custom agate ring made in Toronto?

At Skyjems, 27 Queen St East, Suite 1011. We carry a hand-picked selection of banded and fire agate, every gem graded on site by a GIA-certified specialist. Choose your dream agate in person, and if you want we can design custom jewellery with you, carried out by our master goldsmiths here in Toronto. A family gemstone dealer since 1967.

Don't know what you want to make? Check out our portfolio for inspiration, we have created tens of thousands of rings over the past 27 years.

Can I see loose agates before I choose one?

Yes — that's how we work. Book a viewing or just walk in, sit down with the actual stones, and we'll discuss origin and treatment on every agate.

Is agate dyed, and is it good for a ring?

Agate is a natural banded chalcedony; some commercial agate is dyed to brighten it, so we tell you plainly which of ours is natural and which is treated. At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale it's reasonably hard and wears well in a ring, pendant or earrings.

Agate is a translucent variety of microcrystalline quartz that occurs in a wide variety of colours ranging from grey, black, and brown to pink, red, white, and yellow. One of the first stones to ever be fashioned by humans, Agate’s name comes from the Achates River in southwestern Sicily, where it was first discovered.
