Collection: Ruby

Rubies are a variety of the mineral corundum with colours ranging from pink to their coveted deep red, which is determined by the levels of chromium in the stone. Named for the Latin word ruber (red), rubies boast the highest price per carat of all the gemstones and grace the fingers of Katy Perry, Eva Longoria, and both Jessica and Ashlee Simpson, in the form of luxurious engagement rings. In her memoir, Elizabeth Taylor recalls screaming with delight when she received her Van Cleef & Arpels ruby, diamond and gold ring from Pierre Burton...as a stocking stuffer. The 8.24-carat Puertas ruby ring sold at the 2011 Christie’s auction for $4,226,500. Skyjems offers GIA-certified rubies from Mozambique and Tanzania––the same stones used in designs by Tiffany, Van Cleef, Harry Winston, and other industry leaders.

Among the world’s most famous rubies is the DeLong Star Ruby with its beautiful 6-rayed star. The gem was actually stolen from New York’s Museum of Natural History in 1964, along with the Star of India and Midnight Star Sapphires. Thankfully, all three stones are now back in the museum’s permanent collection. Another famous gemstone is the Graff Ruby, the 8.62 carat cushion-cut Burmese ruby that sold at a 2014 Sotheby’s auction for over $8 million.
